Is it safe? How likely will it overheat? How do I do it?

Technically you cant. the XT is a different Core than a regular 9600(RV350) vs the XTs(RV360). You may be able to overclock to XT speeds but that is pretty much it

hmm.. I've tried to change the pipelines from 4 to 8 using ATI tools and the modded drivers that softmod provided.... but... When I checked it still says I have only 4 pipelines. How can I change it to 8? And is there a way to tell the temperature of your video card (when overclocked)? I do not have a temp probe installed for my video card.

9600XT only has 4 Pipelines there is nothing to open. Only XT models in the 9x00 series have Temp Probes

Hmm... are you sure if I mod my speed to XT speeds it wouldn't over heat?
The default core speed for my card is 398 Mhz
Memory core 297 Mhz
What should I mod it to (to get closest performance to XT) without causing artifacts or damage to the card?

it's all about the risks man, you could fry your card or you might not. if you're concerned, either get better cooling or don't do it at all. No one can tell you for sure what's gonna happen until you just do it.

Use ATI Tool to determine your highest clock speeds and then take off 10mhz off each clock speed you get. You should be able to run @ those speeds, but it is a good idea to get better cooling!

umm... well I noticed once I changed my clock speed... the average FPS gains that I get is around 2 fps or so.. that's not a lot... example would be having GPU clock speeds at 435 Mhz or so... for memory I clocked it to around 310 Mhz... Also the jumps compared to non-overclocked version is much bigger
Non Clocked version : 96 - 104 fps
Clocked version :91 - 115 fps
As you can see, although fps does gain, but the range between highest and lowest also becomes bigger. Therefore, it is not stable fps that I'm getting = / I'm still wondering if Overclocking is a good idea.
For cooling, I have already bought Artic cooling VGA Silencer Rev3. as posted on this site. So far it's working like a charm. I haven't fried my video card yet (luckily)

Who's the maker of the card? Almost every Gigabyte 9600Pro can reach XT speeds. There's no big chance of overheating the card. 9600Pro core isn't so hot, but it's good that you use VGA Silencer3.
