I have a Radeon 9800 Pro. My cousin has a 6800GT lying around somewhere, and I was wondering if it would be worth it to steal it from him... not really steal, but more of just borrow. I don't know the clocks of the card but I know it is a 256mb. Which card is better?

the 6800gt hands down.

No doubt, the 6800GT is a far better card. Not even a question.

I agree with KTR, the 6800GT is better.

It's generally got better specs than the 9800pro, including shader model 3.0 support, plus it's 256MB, your card is only 128MB. Not that it makes an awful lot of difference on those two cards, but the small differences add up.

I can't believe you even asked that :P 9800 is quite a few generations behind the 6800.

I asked because I was bored and figured I might as well make a thread asking whether it was worth the 3 mile bike trip to my cousins to pick up the 6800GT.

Besides the 6800gt being a lot faster the bike trip will burn some fat on your body and therefor be extra valuable.

yeah, its all good. ill pick it up tommorow. i just read on another forum that the 6800GT scored higher than the 7600GT on 3dMark05. Thats awesome, because if i can get 7600GT fps and quality in oblivion with that card i would be so fricking happy. oblivion is pretty much the standard of good video cards in my eye. if a card can make oblivion look pretty, then im happy.

I upgraded from a 128MB 9800Pro (flashed to XT) to a 6800GT and was severely under whelmed. Sure it was faster, but not that much faster. It was noticeable but nowhere near as distinct as the numbers would lead you to believe.

Bastard thing cost me £200 back in the day, which was a good price at the time. One of the worst decisions I’ve ever made, wish I’d stuck with the 9800 Pro for another year. Sold the thing last week actually, replaced it with a 256MB X1950XT. Now that WAS a worthwhile upgrade.

I don’t know how the 7600GTs perform, but I can say that the 6800GT was utterly useless in Oblivion. It could either provide eye candy or double figure frame rates, not both. The two were mutually exclusive.

Having said that, since it’s free you can’t go far wrong. Go for it. :toast:

depends on rest of system specs, i can garentee that the 6800 would be a more than noticable difference in performance in almost every 3d app.

6800GT without question.

Well Ijust checked out FiringSquad, and they are usually pretty reliable and the 6800GT outperformed the 7600GS in Oblivion, and after seeing my friends 7600GS perform in Oblivion, I can't wait until I get the 6800GT, which will probably be today after school.

6800GT = X800XT

9800 PRO is 1 generation before the X800 :)

i think u should do some think about ur power supply first !!

Oh yeah, PSU, I forgot about that, well done little geek.

6800GTs do suck a lot of juice and are very sensitive to voltage drops. Anybody with an AGP 6800GT ever noticed the little buzzer/speaker thing next to the molex connector?? Ever wondered what it's there for?? It lets out a terrifying screech when the 12v rail drops too low. I’ve had two 6800GTs and both have done that. Early models would sometimes permanently kill the memory if the 12v rail dropped too low. That's how I lost my first 6800GT (Leadtek). The second one was an XFX and had a totally different PCB, it survived.

Moral of the story: you need a fairly beefy PSU. I found out the hard way that a 430w Thermaltake unit isn’t enough, but a 580w Hiper is.

Yeah, my 350 watt ran the x1600xt though so I'm not too worried. My Harddrive, mobo, and DVD drive shouldnt take up too much juice, so I think I can suffice, at least until I upgrade... I need a job first tough...

my freaking cousin gave the card away like a day before i asked him about it. he had a 6200 kicking around, but I figured my 9800 pro was still better than that.

yeah 6200 is like an X300.

9800 is on par with an X700 :p

Well, I am happy now, as I just installed Oblivion and am running it @ 800x600, AAx2, Bloom lighting, view distance 100%, grass fade distance 100%, tree ~50%, actor fade ~50%, object and item ~75%, but no interior or exterior shadows, and I run it outside @ about 30fps. Nothing special, but I was surprised it ran as well as it did. Its not as pretty as it was with my x1600xt, but hey, beggars can't be choosers. I had the grass fade at like 0%, but when I bumped it up to 100%, I got a gain of ~5fps. I tried to create a Nord that looks like the evil Arthas from WCIII, but he ended up looking almost exactly like Boromir from LotR. Meh, I'll just edit him using the console command "openracemenu" when I get the time to. It sucks though because since I edited all the races for optimization, I can't use Ren's hair... *tear* I think there is a custom race mod from her that will make it work...

9800 is quite a few generations behind the 6800.

 since when is 1 generation "a few"?
