Use "Speedfan" or similar program to up fan speed to full on. Check bios setting for fan controll and set to run fans full speed (on). Add Air intake fan to pull in fresh (cool) air. Add additional fans to exhaust hot air. Maybe even a "blowhole", by cutting hole in top of case and adding a fan to pull hot air out top of case.
Also redo/replace the thermal compound for Artic Silver 5 or better(ceramik)sp.
Even add an aftermarket CPU cooler. to improve cpu cooling.

My friend has a Pentium D, maybe even the one you have. It idles at 60*C in one of Gateway's BTX cases. I think they are just hot chips.

o ok if it idles at 60 sounds like mine but since i got my 8800gts , thehole of my case really heats up and cpu temps rise quite a bit so im gona have to get an aftermarket cpu cooler by the sounds of it ive dun everythin else when i say get hotter, the cpu fan sppeeds up alot to try and cope

How many case fans do you have? I have 2 and a 915 pentium d and I was recently having idle temps at 60 also. Turns out the heatsink was just not on there all the way. See if you can push it all the way in. My cpu idles at 35 now. Be careful though.

60 idle is way too hot...evne though the 8800 is a hot card, there's no way it can raise temps of your idle cpu to 60 unless you have absolutely no air flow, or live in a sauna!! If I were you I'd redo the compound on the heatsink and reseat it, check your fan configuration, and maybe add a fan or two if possible. Like Farlex85 said, check to see if your cpu is seated correctly. 60c is more like the max you want to run under full load and still be in the safe zone...my buddy has an 805d oc'd w/stock cooling at it sits about 40 idle.

how's the airflow in the case? if the 8800 made the temps rise signifcantly, that's a sign of not having good airflow.

Best options:
A) Get after market cooling for both VGA and CPU
B)Replace the crappy thermal compound supplied by manufacturer with AS-5.
C) Both solutions A and B
D)Get more and/or better case fans.
E)All of the above.

Yep exactly that..and if your case is basic with limited air flow and only a couple of 80mm fan mount locations, consider a new case that had better thermal characteristics, and 120 or even 92mm, or even many 80mm fan mount locations. I have 4 fans, 2x 80 in, 1x 80 top exhaust and 1x120 rear exhaust, I run them at 50% so it stays quiet, and I still get good air flow and plenty of cooling!

well this is the problem i had when the 8800 gts was on full load the heat came out of the side closer to the sli slot instead of being pumped out completely via the bak, and it seems to always do this i dno why and by the look of its construction, thers nuthin i can do about it
only mods help from what i found
difernt card but same prob 7800gs stock 61c idel 85c load
so i took off the heat sink just cleand the core spot sanded it a lil then sanded all the [heat front heat sink mounts/posts] about 1mm maby 2 put some [artic silver 5]on the core an that was it [i tested the ddr3 ram]
temps with a meter an they wer fine so i dident mess with them bout [45c load when it was stock never did an after sucks testing each chip thers 8 an hard to get to wile runnen
now with the stock fan it can idel 43c an 50-60c load
