Be sure to "break the glaze" on the old paint with either fine sandpaper or "Wet" paper.
Use anything you want as long as it's for Metal on the metal parts and paint for plastic for the plastic parts..

you could use an automotive type primer and lacquer for a nice
glossy finish. Get them in spray bombs at the hardware store.
