View Full Version : Odd half-life 2 problem

Just installed half-life 2 after getting my cpu running smoothly again only to find that I have encountered another problem, this one a little more bizarre. As soon as I start a game, a message appears that says "AI disabled" and none of the NPCs do anything but stand there. This obviously makes it impossible to progress, but even if I did, the game would most likely prove to be a little boring like this. The install ran a little screwy from the start, seemingly unable to identify vista and unable to know what to do with my gpu because of it. This seems even more strange to me since the only way to install the game is through Steam, which connects to the internet and gives updates. If half-life 2 simply incompatible with vista? Something I can do?

you can try uninstalling it then run it in compatability mode with xp sp2..

Thanks for the suggestion, unfortunately when I tried to remove it something went wrong. Somehow something somewhere was not deleted. Now when I try to install it again, I get an error message about some temp file or something. It seems registry related probably, but I've tried a number of registry cleaners and the problem remains.

Is the folder itself still there?
If so make sure everythings gone, check for hidden files etc.

I havent tried HL2, but CS:S works fine, and they use the same engine. (Vista)
You probably had a corruption during the installer ;)
Also, try putting this command into console:
ai_debug_actbusy 1
See if that fixes it :)
But - I read that many people with cracked copies are getting a problem similar to yours...so if it isnt legal, i dont think there is a fix. (Not implying anything, just a fact)

Thanks, yea no my copy is legit. Just bought it about a week ago. It is PC-DVD and a slightly different cover the regular version I dunno. I will try those steps in a little bit but I'm warry now. My cpu wouldn't boot today so and I had to restore it to a few weeks ago. I'm gonna wait and see how it acts before re-installing steam, which was giving me a lot of problems recently.

Pretty much the entire game is fine except when I get to the lvl in which they also showed the video at E3 where the strider daddy long leg things would come out and fight and stab you with their legs....... oh wait thats the demo video........
In my experience the spiders were always behind a building and I could never run up to them directly. That bites so hard I uninstalled the game for the HL2 using bait and switch tactics...... I seem to be one of the rare victims as many other said they could walk right up to a spider and be killed........
I scream bloody BS!!!!!!!!!!! grrr...
I will install Hl2 one last time tonight with this new video card I have and see if I can finally meet those spiders

Well I switched back to xp for the moment for a smoother machine (half-life wasn't the only thing giving me problems) only now my damn internet won't work and I which of course prevents me from installing HL2 which requires steam. I'm not going into here but if anyone has any ideas see "Internet?" under general software. I just can't for the life of me get this damn thing to work........
