No, seriously
Ive seen the XL hit 445 on a few reviews.
If I were to use a 200+ watt peltier and a waterblock and jump the vgpu to 1.7v
I think 500 would be possible. 400 to 500 is only a 25% OC
I would like to hear from owners of X800XL and get some personal opinions and overclocking results (even with stock coolers)

I had one that did 445 stock core stock and that was in the 3DM01se Nature Torture loop to. Fully
modded with aux power it did 470. Without the lowK process they respond to increased Vcore, and
the cooling to go with it, rather poorly. The internal leakage currents are just to high.
Between the card cost and the cost of the TEC, WB, etc you could darn near get an x850XT and
cream the poor little modded XL.

Thanks for the info, Viper
I suppose, without the lowK process, increasing the vcore will increase the leakage currents too. The cost savings of non-lowK is worth 30Mhz, i guess.
For $300 though I think it would be worth it to get near XT speeds.
Needless to say, my vid card budget is $300 plus about $20 for shipping. Since I hate nVidia, (GFFX really turned me off) the XL is the best I can afford.
BTW I already have a 215w(I think; it's been lapped so no markings.), 24v peltier and a copper waterblock just sitting around, so whatever card i get, it will be frozen, lol.
Viper, what did you think of the image quality and overall performance of your XL?
any benchmarks?
Price/performance ; is it worth it?
Thx again.

Oh there is no question the x800XL is a great bang for the buck value card. If you can get em on
sale so much the better. I've seen BbATI's retail box on sale for less than $250 a couple of times
at CompUSA (one day in store deals). Their IQ is as good as any other Radeon.
In general the 110nm non lowK process is no overclocking monster and does not yield good bang
for the modding buck but if you already have the stuff laying around gatherig dust then go for it.
There will always be exceptions to "in general" and you don't know if your card will be an exception
until you try.
The card I had was for the first place prize in contest at http://overclocking-madness.com. I just
used my Turbo Magnum-I cooler with a Vcore mod and SuperSink-VI ramsink on it. I didn't volt mod
the memory as it was 120Mhz async as it was. I did add a functional aux power connector to it.
The owner has posted some decent numbers for it here:

Have you run any benches at that speed? I want to know a lot more about the XL, seeing as I'll probably get one, i mean $300 for a 256MB X800 series. Here's your chance to show off your shiny new card. BTW, does it have 1.6nS or 2.0nS ram. I have seen both flavors.

Viper, Those are some awesome scores for the XL! I assume youre THE ViperJohn; I've seen some of your work recently, including a 9800 that gets over 8000 3d03 marks. BTW, 3 fans on a video card??

Yes I am "the ViperJohn" lol. I've had several 24/7 R350/8E cards over 8000 on air in 3DM03.
The pictures at my picture site are old. Air cooled cards only get a card top Active Memory
Cooler and it is optional.

Viper,
How do you get that kind of performance out of an R350??
(seeing as a 9800 is obselete, maybe you could disclose a few secrets??, please?)
Mine's up to 1.85v GPU, 3.2VDD, 3.0VDDQ, 1.50 Vref at 430/370 with ~6700 in 3dMark03 @ 1024x768 Default settings, with a 2.8GHz CPU @ 3.5GHz.
I have A DIP with 4 SPST so I can turn the mods off for browsing, etc.
BTW, how do you know so much? It's like you're an ATI engineer or something.

What memory chips do you have (Samsung RA-GC2A's or Samsung 8E-GC2A's) Please do not tell
me Hynix lol.
For any Samsung chip your Vddq way to high and is hunting your memory OC not helping it.
Just leave Vddq and Vref stone stock for any Samsung chip on an 9700/9800Pro card. Vref never
needs to be touched on Sammy chipped cards.
For Samsung RA chips run from 3.1 to 3.3 Vdd. Ramsink quality, passive or forced cooling and the
chips themselves will determine what the highest VDD that helps the OC is before the Vdd wall is hit.
For Samsung RA's use either the P/N 113-A07502-105 or the P/N 113-A07518-100 Edie bios dated
8/29/03 which ever is better with your card. The normal 113-A07502-106 shipping bios used with
most RA chipped cards is a terrible memory OC bios.
For Samsung 8E chip all the RA chip info applies except for the Vdd run. With 8E chips anything over
about 2.925 will typically hurt the OC rather than help. For most sets of 8E chips 2.875 Vdd is as good
as it gets. The only bios here is the P/N 113-A07518-100 Edie bios dated 8/29/03. ATI's 4/29/03
dated version will kill your memory OC.
Also 8E chips will only hit the super high OC's they are capable of (419-432 range) using software.
If you run a bios memory clock higher than around 360 with 8E chips you stand a good chance of
loosing the high software OC's as memory cascade display corruption (you will no it when you see
it!!!) will set in at a much lower OC than if a lower bios memory clock was used.

Thanx for the info, Unfortunately, It's hynix mem, Arghh. I really don't feel like baking the card and pulling off the BGA's. (Do you think that's even possible without a hot air reflow station?)
I did get a good deal on the card though, $31 off of ebay.
Some guy tried modding it for a mac and messed it up.
It now has a 128K EEPROM on it though, so it could be used for PC/MAC. (had to resolder the chip though, the previous owner did a p**s-poor job soldering it; probably the reason it had ~32K of a corrupted mac bios when I got it. lol)
So samsung memory makes that big of a difference?
What do you think is the absolute maximum GPU voltage, assuming it is cooled properly?
Also, is it normal for a VGPU mod to affect memory OC? (lose about 5Mhz@1.8v)
I usually leave the mem and vref mods switched off, they don't help anyways.
Wow, talk about being off-topic (I am bad at that though; short attention span)

i have a HIS X800XL iceQ. no vmods done cuz from wat ive seen its not worth it.
the card i have is a "turbo" version and garantees me a 430 core clock and 1ghz ram clock.
card overklocked piss poor @ first just 435/550. so i figured i flash the card to a X850XT with edited core and mem clocks. that gave me a 445/555 max clock..
so i edited the orginal XL bios file and changed the core clock to 450 and mem to 550 and the device ID to X850XTīs ID, this worked fine indeed. (edited the device ID just to get temp and fan monitor in ati tool.

The X800XL is a different core than the X850 (R430vsR480) so I don't see how you could successfully flash it.
Could you post a screenshot with 3dmark, device info, and card clocks displayed??
I don't mean to sound skeptical, but I've read people's posts on flashing an XL to X850, nobody can prove it, and they just disappear after a couple posts.
By the way, is your card PCI-e or AGP? If what you have stated is true, it's very exciting news for me. My goal is to OC an XL to 500 core.

i havent flash it with a "real" X850 bios. had some graffic problem with em. i know theres diff cores thats why i edited HIS orginal bios for the card. also had some problem with cats 5.3 when i used it, but seems to gone away in cats 5.4.

Yes the x800XL AGP is out. They are about $50 more than a PCIe version.
You score is in the ball park but 3DM03 is effected by system speed. 3DM05 is a better benchmark
for compares as it is effected the least and very little by system unless the differences is very large.
To give you some idea and frame of reference the x800XL I had in a DFI 250GB running 280 x 10 1:1
did the following with 441/567 card clocks.
3DM03 = 12,359
3DM05 = 5,387

That's damn good with only stock cooling! (For an XL anyways) This X800XL keeps sounding better and better.
PCI-e or AGP?? Looks like I'm putting in overtime the next couple weeks, then the XL is mine.
BTW, I'll have a voltmodded 9800 pro with Zalman ZM80D, 80mm tornado up for sale soon. If anyone wants to throw opinions on how much I could get for it, post 'em.

I'm about to buy a ATI x800xl for $300 AGP
I'm upgrading from a 9800 pro that I flashed to an XT and am pretty happy with....
Should I do it? Is it worth it ?
Can I expect a big jump in any area?

Well, coming from a guy that went from a 9800 Pro 128mb (OCed to XT) to an x800 Pro, I wasn't that happy at first, because I had just spent $400. Then I changed my mind about 3 days later and loved it after realizing that I could run nearly every game at the highest settings. I was especially happy when I just recently flashed to XT PE about two months ago. Overall that x800xl will be a nice improvement.
