Anything that you wish since you wanted it to be installed... :p

Hehe... just joking... maybe set up your PC as a streaming radio/video unit and pump it out to your home TV/Hi-Fi... :D

... or even BitComet/BitTorrent... :D

Indeed, but on the other hand, emule has a built in search engine and lets you download whatever amount of files you want at the same time :)

Don't say anything bad about 56K, W1zzard had that until not too long ago. You might hurt his feelings :P

56K pwnz!~~

zAAm
05-15-2005, 11:02 AM
Yup, I've had 56k since mid 2004. Unfortunately, here in SA we don't have access to such bandwidth... I have 512k/256k ADSL. With a 3GB cap too! All for the amazing price of $166 per month! Ain't life great in SA??

Halki
05-15-2005, 06:12 PM
well, hi-speed connections are, and will stay a dream for a loooong time for me and my buddies:
DSL - no chance, we are > 7km off nearest telephone station
cable - similarly
edge - no signal
802.11 - bad terrain

this is THE god forgotten place on earth... O.o

zAAm
05-15-2005, 07:54 PM
Yeah well, I live in the second biggest city here too... Doesn't seem to help. But we have a telecommunication monopoly. So prices are way too high. Nothing for us to do till some competition surfaces. :(

gR3iF
05-15-2005, 07:58 PM
think about sattelite interface? from another provider

DanTheBanjoman
05-15-2005, 08:12 PM
sattelite works via 56K, it's high latency high speed downstream, upstream is 56K though. Sending data to a sattelite is very expensive.

gR3iF
05-15-2005, 09:21 PM
yeah but isnt it cheaper than 160 dollar a month dont know just a guess

Halki
05-15-2005, 10:25 PM
and the upstream would have to go thru the telephone company anyway...

1500 euro's to set up and starting from 100 euros ex vat per month, it's 2 way though.

Seems they changed that, last time i checked (ages ago) it was one way. Like this:

crazy, comcast's regular connection speed (in this part of MN) is 4.3Mb/326Kb
and with the upgrade for 10 bucks, it's 6.5Mb/412Kb

even with the 4.3Mb limit, without upgrading, i downloaded at an avg (assuming the server i was downloading from had the bandwidth) 450-500KiloBytes per second.
now this beast can hit anywhere up to 800KBps with the supposed 6Mb connection. also, internet congestion on the cable lines around here is about as possible as me bangin all 3 of those girls at the party i was at last night. :-p just doesn't happen!

The problem here with ADSL isn't actually the speed. I mean, 512K is a huge improvement over 56K, but what's bad is the 3GB usage cap. If your usage (Incoming + Outgoing) exceeds 3GB, they put you on a "sin line" with lower than dial-up speeds... And there's satellite, but it's much more expensive and upstream is 56k. There's also wireless, which we are considering, but the problem is it's capped too! 1Mbit connection but capped to 3GB. That's no fun! Oh, and the ADSL and Wireless fees double with each additional 3GB!!

jeez! yall must have alot of internet users down there, with those kind of bandwidth caps! i think just this year alone, my computer has been through about 100 gigs in bandwidth... we download lots of stuff here! (beta testing mad games has helped that also :P, lots of stuff to download@

No, it's actually the exact opposite. We don't have enough internet users. ADSL 512K have only been in SA for about 3 years now... And o'course, the telecom company being a monopoly, they can pretty much do what they wish. (Just an example to prove this, it's cheaper for someone in UK calling SA than me calling my neighbour ;) ). They keep saying things like "we've got competitive prices" and sh*t like that, but competitive with who???

Its liek that here in the USA also. Each cable company has about 1/3 of the country to themselves, with there being 3 cable companies. So prices dont change.

And same for phone companies, but there are more, but each has a monopoly over a huge region.

I read on some of the Comcast stuff, when I worked for the call centre. They seem to have fast net down there. I'd like to get a satallite hook up. But I guess I can't complain when I get mine for free :D (dad works for phone company)

Many of you complain about your bandwidth of 2Mbps or more, but I live in supposedly THE most Industrialized/Advanced/Greatest/Most Powerful nation on earth  , or so our very excellent propaganda tells me, But up until January of this year the only internet access I could receive was 56kbps dial-up. Hell! Just this year there was a story on the news about a town who just got phonelines! Now I finally got a blazing 256\512 ADSL connection  , but I'm lucky to download at 56Kpbs, most likely do to others congesting the bandwidth!

zAAm
06-14-2005, 02:46 PM
Don't be fooled by the 512Kbps download bandwidth. It's just the max possible. I download at 56KB/s most of the time. The max is 64KB/s but I can only get that for 10 seconds or so and it drops to 55KB/s. But I'm not complaining... Just that I have about 1GB usage left for this month! My dad's gonna kill me (again ;) )!

Do you happen to live in washington? I heard about that, the phone companies had not anted to hok up the town because there wouldnt be any profits because they were so small.

Is'nt it interesting this post began as what to do with a 4Mbps connection and now its about global connections speeds and phonline development :D . I love this place!

Oh without a doubt. I believe the Euro is currently stronger than the dollar and our education system is definetly inferior to that of say Germany and several other European nations. Our sciences are faltering behind Japan and Europe. The only thing we have is one hell of an equiped and trained small military.

If the European Union ratifies a constitution, doubtful since it was rejected by France, America better watch out. And for reference I said "the leading NATIONS of the industrial world." So I'm covering my back there. :D

YOU ALL SUCK! :P

ADSL2+ is here in Australia and is 24mbit/1mbit...and the download cap is around 40gb for $60 a month (and that is bloody cheap). Uploads don't count towards your monthly limit (unless you are with Telstra (Bigpond, or BigP00 as I call it :P), the worst ISP on this planet, followed by Optus (Optarse :P).
ADSL prices are falling so low it will make pant-sagging (one who wears his pants/jeans drastically low (almost knee height)) individuals seem like they have their pants up to their necks! :P

But, our cable plans here suck. They are uncapped/128k with uncapped being a max of 10mbit which is achievable ONLY if you are sitting on top of your phone exchange *blah*. Some plans are uc/uc but you can't really max out your line because you are sharing limited bandwidth with hundreds of other users on that node. Ghey.

Yee arr! JimmY! :D

Poor foreigners, here in sweden there no download limit at all.
And personally i only got my 56k modem, BUT, im also server-admin
and on that nice thing i uses g3torrent, with webclient so i can add
torrents home over the net to the server to download and then im visiting my
10/10 mbits friend and download it all @ a rate of approx 1MB/s :D

Damn. And Jimmy, you don't need to brag about it. People in Hong Kong have 1Gigabit connections and no download cap so 24Mb isn't so great now is it?? ;) And I know my connection sucks, that's why 80% of the country (except the government because they have 40% of the stock and the company makes billions) hate our telecom company! Because we pay about 1000% more than average...

Same here. Getting 6mbit down and 768 kbit up - previously had 4mbit / 512 kbit. But my ISP doesn't allow its residential customers to run a server! And I am too paranoid about them investigating "high bandwidth usage" if I run Bittorrent, so in reality I never get to use all my bandwidth. I utterly hate Cable because ISP's dont want you running servers with it. But the DSL in my area is more expensive for a lot less speed.

Verizon is offering fiber optic that gives 5 mbit / 2 mbit for $40 a month with no bandwidth restrictions. TomsHardware (http://www.tomshardware.com/hardnews/20050719_120516.html) had an article about it
The only bad thing about Verizon FIOS is that it requires some hefty installation procedures. Also you have to use Verizon's own router that they provide "free." Who knows what kind of junk their router is...

Wow. ADSL prices in SA is dropping! Can you believe it? It's now only $75US for line rental and $46 for a 512K line with 30GB bandwidth cap... Down from $92 for rental and $46 for 3GB! And my ISP is still lagging behind at 3GB limit! Even though I want to switch to another ISP, my dad doesn't want to change his email address. FCOL!

PS. 200 posts :p

I bet it's the other way around. You have 4Mbit down and 512Kbit up ;) What modem do you have? shouldn't be able to let it lock up. My zyxel 650-R works after whatever I do to it. Then again I soften the load by downloading pr0n, it likes that.

My cable modem sometimes locks up. Usually after some heavy downloading. Cheap chinese junk I guess.
