If you have a SSD, why would you need ram? SSD is non volitile ram, right?

sorry for the nuub question.

You pose an interesting question. One would assume that if the files can be accessed as rapidly on on a SSD drive that would eliminate the need for RAM. However, wouldn't there still be a need for the "staging area" RAM provided?

well, since the SSD is as fast as ram, couldn't you just make a virtual ram area on the disk?

SSD is NOT as fast as ram. ram operates at a _____ mhz. SSD i believe doesn't top 200 mb/sec burst speed. if ram could only move 200 mb/sec on the computer, there's no way your computer would feel fast. also, gb/sec lan would be pointless, since the ram can't operate that fast. but in real life, it's useful, just not alot. well not alot until you start getting close to 100 mb/sec transfer.

You're lucky to even get a solid 30MBs on a SDD today, however we're talking about the long term effects of a new technology.

ehh there'll always be faster ram, i think it's just the fundmental's behind the technology, ssd is nonvolitle, so it can't really operate as fast, since every read/write is permant, not just temporary. just what i think, maybe one day it'll be fast enough.

It'll be some time before it all gets smoothed out. I'm hoping they come out with a special 'ram' chip specifically for the OS. It would be nice if every boot was nearly instantly like when a laptop goes into sleep mode.

Ah i see, i was thinking it was faster than that. maybe when they speed it up a bit eh? :)

Actually 200MB/s is more than enough to make a computer "feel fast", PC133 for example does 133MB/s max. And a P3 doesn't feel slow. It is more about latencies in this case. Gbit LAN does 25-35MB/s on average (Ethernet copper) 200MB/s RAM is plenty to achieve that.

Unless of course you didn't make a typo and mean 200 milibit/s.
