View Full Version : CPUs both at 100% - Time for new CPU?

Here is the problem. Last year when I got this AMD Dual Core X2 3800+ CPU it was the shiznit. All my apps and games ran faster than ever and everything went smooth.

Now my CPUs sit at 75 to 100% during games like Company of Heroes, Sup Com, RB 6 Vegas and so on. This happens in XP and Vista. And in Vista my second CPU sits at 45% at all times due to vista being a CPU hog.

I have 2GBs of RAM Dual Channel (1GBx2) When running Sup Com the other day the game crashed and said out of memory.

I think it is time to reload Windows. Not get new hardware. But please, ring in about what you thinkb could be causing the 100% usage (when just a year ago there was no problem).

Thanks,

One thing you might want to try is turning off Automatic Updates, for some reason it takes up 100% now a days when running.

Auto Up is OFF in XP. So that ain't it. But thanks anyway.

Also what is the best Socket 939 CPU? Performance Wise.

Opteron 185 or FX60 (same thing reallly) for stock performance for overclocking passed 185 / FX 60 speeds Opteron 170.

I know this sounds foolish, but uninstall sound drivers, and see if you still have CPU hog problems. My CPU use was constantly at 100% in the Vista beta. I reinstalled Creative Soundblaster drivers, and suddenly Vista sounded good and was quite usable.

And if you're done with that 3800, I'd be glad to take it off your hands .

humm thats weird man I just got Vista on my system 32bit one and it uses 0-1% cpu idle.. msn and this page open in IE7.

I had COH crash a few times on me.. not sure why my video card bios OC is very stable and not even sweating my card at all. onwell :P I hope it sorts itself out and dont crash no more lol... its been good lately but I did have a crash the other night in COH.

Edit: im not sure about my second cpu.. I just used task bar manager to see what my cpu usage was at.

try going through and disabling a lot of unused services (like windows zero config if you on wired connection, windows security center, and so on). also disable all non-ms services and start up items to see if it happens then (do that through start>run>msconfig). clear the windows prefetch (c:\windows\prefetch). use ccleaner (www.ccleaner.com) and clear out all temp files and clear the registry. try atf cleaner as well (just do a google search). run anti-spyware programs (a squared, spybot, ad-aware, super anti-spyware, avg anti-spyware will do). also check out whats going on in the system in the background, use the sysinternals tools (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/Processesandthreadsutilities.mspx) and download the process explorer, autoruns and process monitor. try some of these things, or all these things. oh and also some good old hijackthis (www.hijackthis.de).
