View Full Version : New Case = No Boot?
I was helping my friend move his old system to a new case tonight (using all the same hardware) and now the pc will not boot. We used the same CPU, Mobo, RAM, HD, etc. The only part that changed besides the case and its fans was the PSU. I tested the old PSU with the new case as well and still cant get it to boot. I figured it was a bad power switch in the case so I hooked the old case switch up to the new one and it still didnt boot.
Have any ideas?

Did you bend the USBs together by chance?
I'm not sure what you mean...? We did not use any of the USB ports on the case. Could you explain it a bit better?

I moved a motherboard to a new case one time and bent the usb ports together. Which grounded out the board causing it not to boot.
Its just something easy to check for first.
Thats not the case here. I just double checked. Another thing I didnt mention is that the Mobo light comes on when the PSU switch is on....if that helps any.

Do the fans spin for a sec and turn off?

are you getting any beeps? is the hard drive light flashing? does it post?
Sorry, I must have forgot to tell you. Nothing is happening. No beeps, lights or HD spins. No post for sure! I would have more ideas if that were the case.

is the 4-pin cpu connector connected? is the ram seated? check all connections.
is the motherboard grounded correctly?

pull that sucker out of the case and set it up on the table. Use a screw driver to touch the power on.
Make sure you have the 4pin(If it has one) is plugged in.
Take out all of the hardware and only install the stuff that you need to boot.
I checked the 4-pin and the 20-pin connections to the board. The Ram is connected all the way. And yeah, the board is grounded. Would the HDD LED plugs matter? We are not 100% sure they are right.

unplug them completely for now.
okay...I am unplugging everything. I am going to try DaMulta's idea. Hope this leads to something. Thanks for the help everyone. I couldnt think of anything else.
Okay....I tried the board with nothing plugged in. Is there anyway the Mobo light would come on and it be fried? BTW, nothing happened.

Your sure your touching the right pins for power?
It has to have CPU, 1 stick of memory and video card.
\Sorry I don't know how well you know this stuff/
lol...they were already unplugged. I had thought of that prior. lol

Do you have another motherboard to test parts with?
reset the CMOS for the hell of it and look and see if a cap is loss on the motherboard.
explain the screw driver thing to me, the processor, video card and Ram are all plugged in, were just not sure what u mean about the screw driving start
we have another Mobo but its Amd this one is Intel but what are u wanting us to test?

Try starting the other machine with that PSU.
test the memory and video card if you can/You should get beeps if memory or video has gone bad. Does your motherboard your working on have a PC Speaker built in on it? Its small round and black.
With the screw driver you just touch the pins for power for a sec and it should boot.

Is the motherboard even connected to the switch?
kk the memory and video are good and so is the psu, we tried the screw driver thing and still nothing
i assume you mean connected to the power switch, and yes it is

we never did get an answer to this question....if the light on the motherboard comes on could the mobo still be fried? i dont know what would of fried it but thats all i can think of

I'm assuming that the old power supply worked in the old case before the upgrade.
Did the new case come with stand offs. Maybe the motherboard is touching the case causing it to short circuit? Secondly does the PSU come with a 4 pin cable, some motherbard require both the 20 and 4 pin cables and some are happy enough with the 20 pin cable alone. Experiment.
Thirdly ensure that your power and reset switch from the case is in the correct pin location on the motherboard, if your not sure look in the motherboard manual or find an online PDF manual.
Okay, this is what happened. I started helping him after he put the mobo in the case. Well, this morning I decided to check everything and in doing so found he had not placed the spacers under the mobo so it was touching the case and shorting. It was fixed today and everything is fine. Thanks for the help everyone.
