View Full Version : Can it be done? 6800gt + arctic Silencer 5 without heat pads on mem

So how can I acheive this?
my last glimpse of the ram was as I stuck the heatsink on and even then the gap looked rather large.
When I screwed the stuff at the back in place would the ram be able to make contact with the heatsink with out the heat pads?

hm use thermal paste? memory without thermal paste or pads would be bad (nvidia allos memory without anything) but for ocing some transport thing will be good

Is there a height difference between the core and the mem?
Only when I know there isn't then will I take of the thermal pads.
I already stuck arctic silver 5 on the mem and core but also left the heatpads on.

remove the heatpads they are rubbish, Check the spacing between mem and cooler, there should not be a sizable gap, if there is apply a thicker layer of as5.

thermal pads+paste omg then give up the pads and just use the paste it fits and the core is higher then the mem but the silencer is made in 2 steps k?

It looks like a 4mm gap. I don't enough arctic siliver 5 for that, got some creamy white paste does the job almost as well. I just wonder how on earth I am supposed to fill the gap of 4mm. It looks like that when I took two pads off, but it could be because the other pads where still on.
I also had a look at the core height in comparison to the mem which is a difference of about 1~2mm considering the arctic silencer is almostly completely flat. I wouldn't want the paste to slide off either.

*thumbs up* u will do it :D

Alright when I feel really confident I should give it a try and take off all the heat pads and paste it.

Heatpads are not very effective at cooling the core, but the same goes for a thick layer of thermal compound. :)

Yep had another look and to be honest the ram is already running at 1ghz, I wouldn't see that great a difference to make it go faster so I have only touched the core atm. Which is good enough for me. And those who say that their card is running at ultra speeds can go stick their head down a toilet since the ultra has ram running in 1.6 ns while the gt only has speeds of 2ns and sometimes 2.2ns
My ram is 2ns so it will never be as good as the ultra therefore no point in oc'ing and claiming ultra speeds. The core is the same though so getting that to 400 is standard.

Yup, your card is already doing pretty fine. By the way, I don't think there are any 2.2ns GDDR3 in the market, not likely to have it on a 6800GT. Correct me if I am wrong. :)

no there is not any card with 2.2 ns ram i think i read that it isn made only 2.0 1.6 1.8 rams are availabel

Maybe that was 66gt, but any way I can't achieve it since the gap seems to be 3~4mm thick, and paste over 2mm is supposed to be pointless.

DOH the hole thread is about cooling ram on nv silencer 5 without heatpads but thanks for this information

lol, Any way I feel a little ripped off by arctic now. It does a wonderful job cooling the core bringing it from 90 to 75 under heavy load, but still not being able to oc the ram at all really as atitool crashed last time I moved it to 1.18ghz.
I hate nvidia's slight and very crap attempt at making a overclocking tester. It tests the speed at the current temp with no test for long term effects, so that is crap. But then again maybe I should be annoyed for BFG's lack of creativity of not including some tools with the card, even saphire include overclocking tools with their ati flagship card.

:D my x800pro ocs well without tool but i guess nvidia cards arent so good because of heat in gaming the card hasnt only to be cool the also has to travel far away

The memory on the 6800GT dosn't seem to have all that much headroom anyways, I just picked up my new GT(old one died) out the box coolbits got 418/ 1.13Ghz so as long as I get ultra speeds I aint too troubled about it.

Run atitool the latest one and watch in horror as even though screensaving power off stuff is off the screen goes bye bye after 15mins, works fine in games at that speed but not in atitool.

I am hoping to get some corsair (with leds) ddr 400+ xms stuff so I can enable super patch mode on my motherboard and see what it does.

Have a look at this:
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/GeForce_6800_GT.html
Look at the Gainward Ultra 2400 Goes Like Hell (6572) GeForce 6800 GT 256MB DDR3 TV-Out/DVI (AGP) - Retail (GX-020-GW)
And tell me thats not an ultra. :D

hmpf bu ocz ram performs better and i would go for the leadtek :D but a nioce card the gainward but loud

OCZ doesn't have flashy lights which is the only reason I will hunt for the corsair on ebay :D.
I am not bothered about performance since the gaps won't be that large (plaese correct me), so I would rather have the xms xl model with its nice timings cl2 and so on.

gR3iF
05-18-2005, 02:53 PM
no there is no big gap the lights are nice :D
but no choice for me i have a closed case :D

I got a window, so lights are my option, I am going to witness 2gb of xms 2 pro's in action soon as soon as my little bro gets his graphics card and water cooling together. Any ideas on vga cooling blocks for a ultra?

i saw one made of cooper for core and alu for ram that has lights and covers ram and core cools very well
