Before you whine it's posted in wrong section it's not. They're both hardware :p
Anyways, I have like £200 (a lot of money at my age) and I can't decide which one I should get.
I want your opinions people :D

depends on what you want to do and what you need. What do you have to run games and what do you have mp3 player wise.
I play games on the PC and I have no mp3 player, although I have like 6GB of songs on my PC so far.. :p
I wanted a 360 because it doesn't need hardware upgrades and it plays great games with no lag. No need to worry if you can run a game or not. Just works.
I also wanted the iPod video because I don't really go out too much, and I think I'd go out alot more if I could listen to music at the same time.
I don't want to upgrade my PC any longer because it always demands more money, a new piece of hardware etc. I don't have the funds for this hobby of computers. So for those of you suggesting new hardware, I say no thanks. I may even just sell my PC altogether and build a cheaper one which isn't for games, then I can use the 360 for games, and the money from the PC to buy an iPod Video.
To be honest I'm still kind of thinking about it. I was in a store the other day and I could have bought an iPod Video right there and then, I had it in my hand... took a lot of mental strength to put it down and say "no". Temptation was very strong lol..
More replies people!
It's a tough choice to make because I only get this kind of money once a year..
P.S. My Sister votes for 360, but only 'cos she wants to play on it :p

I never talk on this forum but im stepping in. CASHETI get an ipod, you know it makes sense. Its the healthiest option. Music stimulates the brain, and I allways see your dark side on the pc, so get an ipod video!

Ahh, man. This is a tough call. I have both, and don't know which I like more.
Well, considering that your computer won't be able to play the newest games cause of your video card, and you don't want to put more money into it, I say 360. At least you'll be able to play most of the newest titles, plus it doubles as a media centre(spelled your way, just for you. lol) extender, allowing you to watch stuff on your TV.

One day when I have a job and some income I will come back to PC's, but right now it's not cost effective...
I think I may end up buying an iPod Video first, gaming on PC for a little longer and then sell the PC to buy a 360. Then when the time is right, build a new PC again. Sounds good :toast:
I guess I've made up my mind... iPod Video at the moment. My mind may change but this is how I feel at the moment. Plus Sonasmo's opinion is quite valuable because I go to school with him and hang out at the weekends (sometimes, but most of the time I'm a loser and stay indoors :D)

As the ipod is the # 1 music player in the wolrd,
I do not like them for this reason
#1 everyone has one
#2 i hate itunes, as you lose your music, you CAN NOT re download it.
#3 apple stuff is proprietary
#4 videos can be a pain in the ass to get on it.
idk, it's mostly just me i think. My borther hates them as well, my dad has one though

I don't download music legally so #2 isn't an issue.
I'm not sure about getting videos on it but I'm sure it's not that hard.
I don't care that everybody has one. That simply means that they're good, and if not, I like them anyway.

Ok, I am a HUGE music fan, and I will say this...iPods suck arse, I will never own one, if I got one for free I would sell it and buy another music device.
I currently have a 1Gb Lavod MP3 Player, it's MUCH better sound quality than the iPod (I have listened to both using the exact same headphones, and exact same track).
The iPod ties you in to iTunes (no drag and drop facility).
The Video side is APPALLING, my friend has one and he wishes he'd got a nano instead. He's had about 4 of them now because of battery problems, next time it goes he's demanding a nano and a refund of the difference.
He had an Archos player and even though it was bulky (quite an old one) it absolutely rocked AND it was cheaper AND has drag and drop AND has much better life span AND you can change the batteries.
My Lavod player cost me £90 about 2 years ago, it's still going and I love the little bugger.
So my vote goes for the XBox 360.

Nintendo wii+ cheaper ipod.
Win-win situation.
The wii is so much better than a 360. I love mine.
Although asking ipod questions on this forum is a bad idea, 99% of people have things against companys named after fruit.
however, do factor in you also have to purchase 360 games.
that adds QUITE a bit to the cost.
If you are going to be driving soon, an Ipod is also an EXCELLENT car radio in your pocket.
It wont be stolen from your car, and its portable so it goes anywhere. I highly reccomend the Nano. Its just full of awesome. I use it as my car radio when i'm driving, and my mp3 player on the go ;D

Ipod is nice, if you have the use for it. Its great if you travel or take the bus to places because you can watch tv shows/movies on it and have a libary of music. One thing to think about is with a ipod video you need a good computer to convert movies to mp4 with videora ipod convertor(free)... thats one reason why I upgraded my computer to a c2d, from a p4.
atm I hardy use my ipod.. it is one of/if not the best mp3/video player around without question. I used it alot more when I was going to the gym, watching movies while doing cardio was great.
Hey if you ask me though a psp owns, it has a very large screen for movies, you can flash it so you can back-up you games to flash cards and its even cheaper than ipod.. minus the 2-4 gigs sony flash card. It also plays music but its just a bigger device, good enough if your not using it for cardio/going to the gym.
I VOTE PSP!

To be honest the Wii plays kinda childish games, and for the few FPS's which do exist on Wii, the graphics aren't that great. Don't really want one.
And speaking of honesty, I won't be paying for any of my 360 games if I get one :D
Also I won't be driving for at least another year, the minimum age in England is 17, I'm 16 :(

I never actually thought about a PSP, but I don't think it's really suited to me. Hand held games consoles aren't really my thing. And there's not enough memory on those things. Plus the fact it's too easy to brick it with messed up firmware.

Spending money on a PC to upgrade it to play the latest FPS's constantly for the rest of your life = you fail at life
Much rather spend that money on a loved one or something better than a PC. Lucky for my PC I don't have a loved one lol...
The whole point of me getting a 360 is so I never have to upgrade to play the latest games nicely. At my age money doesn't come easy. No pocket money, full time student means I can only get a weekend job, which also happens to be the only time I can go out and have fun.

I play every game I have on an x850xt.
Its perfectly fine, and I got it for $45.
Why must you upgrade? ;)
You don't HAVE to have full aa/af on 24/7 to play a game you know. If you can't enjoy a game with a slight dial in graphics, you aren't playing a game to play a game, you're playing to look at eye candy.
Casheti

Yea but I can't even play the new Colin McRae. My card doesn't even run it because it's SM3.0 only, and my X1300 is too weak to play it even on 800x600 all low settings. Lags like fuck.
This is the reason you have to upgrade. I can't even play new games anymore. It's ridiculous. A 360 won't give me this kind of harsh treatment.
It's going to be like this forever, upgrade after upgrade. I can't afford this...
As for the comment about eye candy, it's completely not true. You can become A LOT more immersed in a game if it looks realistic, than if every bad guy is a square.
Take FEAR as an example. It's not scary without the lighting effects and creepy shadows. Looks terrible on lower settings. I can't get scared by little creepy square girl.

Nooooo I'm coming back to PC's when I get a steady income. But for now consoles seem better for my pocket. :D
When the time is right, I will build a completely new rig, which like you say only has to be upgraded every few years...
If I wanted I could just buy an 8800 GTS 320MB and game like no tomorrow (even though my CPU stucks it would still pwn), but then I need a new PSU to power THAT, and the upgrade loop starts all over.
Or I could just buy an X1950XTX and new CPU + Mobo, but I just don't see my money going into this thing as a good investment. I need to start from ground up.
Maybe later on this year I'll build a new rig.

Granted he plays on 1280x768 but some games he plays at 1600X1280 he played oblivion(Few slow downs) at 1600X1200 for ever untill he went HDR/AA which he plays that at 1024x768. He also plays FEAR at 1600X1280 with everything on max and has few slow downs.
The X1950PRO is faster than his card, and you can get his CPU for 30USD. Heck you can get a CPU/Motherboard for 60 USD and the video card for around 100-130 USD NEW. Memory cost about 100 for 2 gigs of the normal DDR2 or DDR.

And I don't want to upgrade the PC because it will make me stay indoors too much and I can't afford to upgrade. One leads to another etc..

Hm.. just some things that they (Apple) have yet to fix on any iPod: 1. A more durable case (it scratches so easily it's not even funny) 2. Integrated FM/ voice recorder 3. Battery life ('nuff said) 4. Slow interface 5. Little support for formats other than mp3 and WAV 6. Video playback (if you can even call it that...) 7. Crappy sound, etc.
If you really, really want to get an MP3 player, take a look at some of the other brands that are available. Products from Samsung, iRiver, Cowon, Sandisk, Sony, Toshiba, Microsoft are all much better than than the iPod in my opinion. And as an added benefit, you won't seem like a bandwagoner if you buy something other than an iPod :P

The iPod has DEFINED an ENTIRE market.
The iPod has brought digital devices to a whole new level.
how is that failure?!! The fact that a fruity company made it, so it has to be bad?

Meh. Go for it then... my first mp3 player was an iPod and I thought the sound was awesome until I tested out other brands at a store. Once I bought my iRiver and Cowon mp3 players, I couldn't go back to the crappy sound that my iPod put out (which is why it's gathering dust on my shelf).
edit @ Dippy: Yes, in respects to business, it is THE product of the decade. Compared to other products on the market however, the iPod's shortcomings are VERY obvious. I wasn't trying to be an anti-Apple fanboy; I tried the iPod and I hated it because I found much, much better quality products from other companies.

Yep some good points there, with an Ipod you Have to buy a silicone case, no fm, I dont find it slow well only if you have to reset it, I did not find thier headphones the greatest many people seem to use them ... thier ok I use good Sony ones. Debating with someone who failed to see the shortcomings of iPods...fun :)
1. Other mp3 players do not need cases to remain scratch free. iPods are so scratch prone that the cases themselves, ironically, will scratch the front and back (which admittedly, looks damn sleek :D ). My Cowon (iAudio) X5 does not need a case; the only way to scratch it is to use a key or a LOT of coins (assuming that it is put in a pocket with those two)
2. Why wouldn't you FM radio and voice recording included? All the other MP3 players included it as a standard feature; Apple is one of the few companies that make you pay a premium for it.
3. 16 hours with no backlight, lowest volume, short tracks, no equalizer, and no browsing for music? No thanks.
4. Slow? Yeah, some are, some aren't. Both of mine were, and most of my friends' iPods were too (most being at least 70%).
5. Void your warranty much? And even if the loading of custom software doesn't void your warranty, that's an extra hassle to go through if you want to play lossless codecs (Apple here, again, forces you to do extra things in order to get the features you want while the majority of other companies include support for other formats as a standard).
6. OMGYESINEED8.1SURROUNDSOUNDNAO!. I was referring to the sound quality, not the sound output. Quality here means clear, undistorted sound with accurate reproduction of high and low frequencies, not how many channels it can output. As of now, I know for sure that most Samsung and iRiver players ship with a customizable equalizer built in; all Cowon (iAudio) mp3 players are shipped with the feature standard.
And fyi, your numbering is out of order ;)

the batt life is ok on the 30gig model with the light not at 100% I get about 8-9 hours half brightness 5 sec timer.. even watching movies I dont want 100% backlight and I switch songs alot at work still get over 8 hours use well lets say 7-9 since I do take a lunch break.
The sound is decent on the ipod, nothing spectacular like Iriver but you wont notice and get useed to ipod (I switched) most Irivers friggin owna nd are damm near undestructable I lost one on my lawn for 2 weeks.. it rained a fair bit durring that 2 weeks and when I found it.. I didnt even have to wait for it to dry.. it turned on and was still working perfect! lost it a couple weeks after that though lol
FM tuner is a nice extra, it costs extra for ipod though as many things lol
You can find a better budget mp3 player that wont cost you much nowadays at least here in Canada, but 30 gigs rules.
Edit: the updated firmware for ipod lets you ajeust the brightness of your backlight.. that made me happy :) saves alot of batt life.

06-10-2007, 10:20 PM
And fyi, your numbering is out of order ;)
1.) cases are nice.
2.) because I don't use either of those features. Those are exactly why I bought an ipod. I didn't buy it to do those, because I don't to it, and neither do a large majority of people. Its all flash and little use.
3.) I used my ipod shuffle for over 3 weeks driving to and from work for an hour every day and didn't charge it. Its a little over the size of a golden dollar. If you're like a normal user you plug your ipod into a computer often enough to keep it topped off, and NEVER run out of battery life.
4.)slow? Something's broken. I've used/owned 3 original ipods, a mini, the original nano, a new nano, a new shuffle, and a video. I'll admit the video is kinda sluggish when messing with videos, but thats TBE on a small device. It is a hard drive after all.
5.) it doesn;t void your warranty, unless you idiocally manage to brick it beyond repair (which means you're an idiot). Also, what other mp3 player runs linux? Plays doom? NONE.
6.) This will depend on what music you listen to. Classical? Maybe theres a difference. Something 90% of the TARGET AUDIENCE listens to? No different. Audio quality is quite relational as to what one prefers, what one is capable of hearing, and what you're listening to. You do know you can listen to things in best buy right?
The audio quality argument is the biggest crock of shit thats been invented in arguing which is better, because like women, there are many preferences!
Some people have a strange obsession with feet.
Some people have an obsurdly annoying obsession with making the bass in your car break its window. That certainly doesn't sound "decent".

Meh. You'll never change your view about the iPod and neither will I... so here's the last response I'll give.
1. Not having to spend extras on cases is even nicer.
2. Sure, you may not use it but it's a feature that should have been included (Apple needs to up the ante as most other mp3 players include an FM tuner + voice recording). Including a FM tuner/voice recording is like extras on cars; If you bought a Mercedes, wouldn't you want a GPS if ALL the other car companies provided them as a standard feature? Same thing here.
3. "Topping off" your battery will shorten the already short battery lifespan fyi. And Shuffles do not count as they are flash-based, and do not include a screen. iPod 30gb's have hard drives and a relatively large screen that sucks up battery life. Keep it an apples-to-apples (no pun intended) comparison, please.
4. Hm.. not really. My first one was fine in the beginning up until the 10gb mark (out of 15gb [3rd gen]). Then it started to slow down and randomly lock up... the cherry on top was when the iPod got scratched when I left it on my desk without it being touched or moved in any way. The second one lasted a bit longer; after it started to slow down I got fed up and bought an iRiver mp3 player. Whenever I use my friends' iPods, they lag like no other. I guess for some people it would seem acceptable, but to me, if I paid $300+ for an electronic device I expect it to run flawlessly, or at least very close to it.
5. I won't bother to check the EULA/Warranty info for iPods but I'm pretty sure loading custom software voids your warranty, much like how OC'ing your processor voids its warranty. And may I ask why you're playing Doom on your iPod? You don't listen to radio, nor do you browse through your music but you play Doom on your iPod... nice.
6. I do not consider myself to be an audiophile, yet even I can tell the difference between the muddy crap the iPod puts out and clear sound that my other mp3 players put out. And yes, I do know that I can test mp3 players out at Best Buy as that's how I found out how crappy the iPod sounded in the first place! :)

You do know lithium ion batterys go through "cycles" right? Most people are still ignorant to this type of battery.
http://www.batteryuniversity.com/partone-12.htm
Priming will make little difference because the maximum capacity of lithium-ion is available right from the beginning. Neither does a full discharge improve the capacity of a faded pack.
if I paid $300+ for an electronic device I expect it to run flawlessly, or at least very close to it.
You're the first person I've ever seen claim an ipod lags.

Possibly. but if you mess up linux, all you have to do is plug it into the computer, run apple updator, and VOILA. Just as if you pulled it out of the box.
but yes, i play doom on my Ipod. why? because its fun as hell. It gives a whole new perspective on the game with the ipod controls.
I browse through my music probably more than anyone. I have -never- had any issues. and i try to avoid the radio as much as possible. I'm not alone. My friends do the exact same thing I do. Use an ipod instead.
6. I do not consider myself to be an audiophile, yet even I can tell the difference between the muddy crap the iPod puts out and clear sound that my other mp3 players put out. Also, when you rip CDs to it. (I know you don't buy many. lol) Use AAC, it sounds much better than mp3.
DVDfab Platinum will also convert dvd's to iPod.
@Anticlutch - as for the sound issue - www.rockbox.org.
The problem with iPod's audio quality is related to it's eq. Don't use them and it sounds better. And the UI isn't slow. Mine responds immediately. Even my 20GB 3rd gen responds immediately. There must be something wrong with yours.
It's fine that you don't like iPods, but they are not bad products, like you're making them out to be. Plus, no other player on the market has as many accessories available to them.
ipods here are overpriced compared to creative or other brands, and i like having fm too (so as most ppl i know)

Okay first off, I'm very proud of this heated debate you have produced, and there's some real useful advice in here which will come in handy very soon.
Anticlutch, I am intruiged as to what you mean by "lossless codecs". Explain?
2nd, Thanks for the battery advice and the firmware tip, I'll keep that in mind.
3rd, Dippy, am I right in thinking your link is telling people no matter how you treat/charge your battery, the life will always be the same? Please explain.
4th, DOOM on my iPod?? I must know how to do this!!
5th, I have experienced lag using a friend's iPod Video, but I think that can be classed as "loading times" more than lag itself.
6th, I have used numerous iPods before, from friends etc.. and I've always found the sound quality very much enjoyable, although I think the new earbud headphones are terrible compared to 1st generation ones.
7th. Wile_E, are you saying if I convert my music to AAC it will sound better than mp3?? If so, explain..
8th, Again @ Wile_E, what is this about the iPod's "eq"? I don't understand what you mean here, and the fact you used the word "problem" isn't too comforting. What do you mean by "don't use them" also?
And finally, 9th, what is this rockbox firmware link that you have provided supposed to do?
Thanks for all the replies so far guys, it's been a great help.

iPod also has a lossless codec. It's called Apple Lossless. You can rip your CDs to it if you wish, but it does take up more space. Most of my CDs are in Apple Lossless for mine, my favorites I just rip as AIFF files (basically the same as .wav, zero compression)
If your files are already mp3, leave them as such. Cross encoding to a different format actually hurts the music, as it's being compressed twice. But if you are ripping directly from a CD, use iTunes to make them an AAC file instead of an mp3. They sound much better for the same bitrate. If space isn't a huge concern, Apple Lossless would sound even better.
As far as the EQ, i'm talking about the equalizer. Setting it to a Bass heavy setting like Rock or Bass Boost actually causes distortion, because whoever decided on the settings needs to be slapped.
The Rockbox firmware is basically a new OS for your iPod. Fully customizable, and the EQ settings can be set completely custom, you don't have to use factory presets. You can even change the frequencies the eq alters. IE: instead of the first slider being set to only adjust sound at 50HZ, you can set it to change 40Hz or 100Hz or whatever you want. Full sound control. You'll have to dual boot tho, cause rockbox doesn't play videos, iirc.

TBH Cash, I heard a price cut is underway for the 360 BUT, unsure if its only in the states or not. Like many others stated Wii + Nano or a PSP.
Oh and just to prove a point, the wii is not made to set gamebreaking graphics, it is strictly there for gameplay and games for the whole family.
But as my final opinion/suggestion, it would be a PSP.

Lithium ion batterys charge in cycles, as long as you aren't voltage/current abusing the battery, life span should not be greatly hampered by "topping off" relativly often. Nickel batterys are what caused this "belief" to come around, where those WILL lose life span greatly when charged incorrectly without draining, etc.
As for doom on your ipod, google "ipod linux"..
Its terribly easy these days :)
But theres not only doom. Theres a TON of stuff you can do with ipod linux.

Topping off does have its drawbacks if you look at cell phones however. People who top off their battery every night tend to kill their battery faster than those who wait until there is very little charge left before charging it up.
