adding ram to older computer (2000ish)

my friend wants me to add some more ram to her PC to make it faster. im not sure of how old it is exactly but she says it uses windows 2000 so its prolly like a pentium 2 or 3 prolly 3. but i have some sdr ram 256 mb sticks 3 of them. i am wondering if i can just pop them in and it will work. i really dont want it to crash and it will be all my fault. the ram works or should. it was in another freinds PC that i took apart about a year or two ago and it worked. so i just put them in the ram slots and start it back up and its fine?

read label to confirm what ram she has, probably sdram pc100 or maybe pc133 with 168 pins.

if it's the same pin size it will work, it's better to use all pc133 if you can

the memory speed doesn't matter on anything that old because your only gonna be using leftovers to upgrade like you are doing so your selection is limited to what you have on hand.

ok well i saw the comp today. i didnt see if it was 168 pins but i bet it was bc it said sdram. it has 512 mb or ram not sure wat speed, a amd XP 2600 or something at 2.06 ghz. i dont think it has a gpu, and it has 120 gig hdd. so it blows. but the sticks of ram i have are only 256mb sticks and she has 512 mb. i bet theres 2 256 sticks and only 2 slots on the mobo. or maybe one 512 and one open one im hopping atleast. what i have is 3 sticks of 256 sdram. i wanna get in atleast one. would that boost performance much adding another 256?

Would help quite a bit quasar, you would be surprised! Also, the RAM in her pc may just be DDR.
