Laptop cpu temp

What is a normal temp, under load, for an AMD Turion 1.6GHz? The reason I ask is that lately my laptop has been turning off right when i'm in the middle of a game, which leads me to believe it's an overheating issue. The temp of my proc right before it last turned off while I was playing Fear Combat was 87 degrees celsius.

thats way to high for the cpu your fan is probably broken or you have a lot of dust in yur laptop you should get it looked at by ome 1 who knows abit about computers.

Clean out the dust really well, If you had the ambition, replace the thermal paste with some sort of arctic silver. Check of course, if the fan is even working, but with a laptop things are made to run without complications, so it probably is something from wear and tear overtime. Also, there was one report of new I Books, where the workers put on like a whole syringe of thermalpaste as they were instructed to do so, but to much=little to no transfer, its very very rare but it could be in your laptop. best bet, check fan, dust and if you want to replace thermalpaste.

Thanks for the tips guys, I'll crack her open as soon as I can. BTW I can hear the fan go so I'm pretty sure the fan isn't broken.

Well the fan on is good!:laugh: When you/if you take off the heatsink, wipe down the core with Rubbing alcohol, that will take off the old thermal paste in an instant and leave in nice and clean for new stuff. Also, if you can, take pics of the battle!:D

It's normally just dust in your air vents. Do yourself a favour and get a cooling pad.

Well my friend and I opened up my comp, cleaned the dust, cleaned the core and replaced the paste with AS. Fans all seem to be working. Unfortunately I don't have a camera, sorry Fox. So I booted up Fear combat and after 20 or so min of playing my comp turns off again. Honestly I'm at a loss of what to make of it. My proc is still reaching 87 (72 idle). I have no warranty either as it expired last year.:banghead:

Did you check the heatpipes to ensure they were clear? :toast:

Some of those "Heatpipes" could actually be tubes to carry out the hot air, Make sure they are not clogged.

How much thermal paste did you use? Too much can also cause overheating! Is the lappy on a hard surface? Because setting them on a bed(etc) can block air intake. Can you get into BIOS and check the 'PC Health', can you increase fan speeds?

I applied a small amount of paste, just enough to cover the cpu (i have done it many times before on other comps). The BIOS is useless, only gives system info other basics. Can't change fan speeds or check PC Health. I have the laptop on a table and I have gone as far as raising it up by putting blocks under the corners so it has about 1cm clearance from the table.

What OS ? (because of Ubuntu's nasty lack of ACPI support) Also found issues with Mandrake. High altitude, and bad batterys.

You could get a nice cooling pad, the temps seem way to hott, but I do have a friend with a lappy that ould overheat unless he had a box fan running in front of it in the summer. :laugh:

Windows XP Home. I think i'm gonna look into getting a cooling pad, this is just getting rediculous, I can't play any game for more than 15-20 min. :banghead:
