I have an opty 165 and it's missing 2 pins. I heard there WAS a guy online,Gary Headlee ,who did fix and try to boot them. He is no longer in business or changed sites. Either way I was wanting some input as to "PASTING" the pins from a sempy to it with Arctic adhesive?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835100005
Says its good from 50 to like 100*c and states it will never come undone. I thought it might be a feasable idea. Input Please.
And yes I realize its conductive , but was wondering maybe just a dob would do?

If you have the pins ready, then yeah, just a very very small dot on the end of the pin.

lol...they are still on the sempy so I have lots to try with.

Nice, 754 pins at your disposal!

Ok sneeky I know how much you value my Opinion so here ya go; straight from the Spec sheet on the product in your link;
Negligible electrical conductivity:
Arctic Silver Thermal Adhesive was formulated to conduct heat, not electricity.
NOTE: Even though Arctic Silver Thermal Adhesive is specifically engineered for high electrical resistance, it should be keep away from electrical traces, pins, and leads. The cured adhesive is slightly capacitive and could potentially cause problems if it bridged two close-proximityelectrical paths.
So...GO FOR IT!!(You dont listen to me anyways!):toast:

hahahaha....thats why I asked . I needed to figure out why everyone else with this issue hasnt found the easy answer. Yes you just rained on my parade but I figured there had to be a catch!
But am i reading correctly ,that they are saying in stupid ppl terms, it may be ok if i dont get it all over the pin ends like some noob?

solder that bastard back on!

may have to ...need lower temp iron and gold solder is all....but after all its garbage as is.....wont boot without em!
Oh and it's BASTARDS....@random

Gold has a higher melting point than solder.

was reading that gold was the only way because of the coating on pins? Then again I guess trying something else as far as solder will either work or it wont! My bro-in-law has an adjustable iron...I'll pack the sempy and the opty and see what we can do to her....he's an old school electronics guy with a steady hand.
Oh well if all goes well I'll post some pics and screenies , if it ends up easy I may get a new side income out of it....LMAO

Try and use the highest Silver content solder you can find. They used to sell 70% and 90% hav'nt seen them in a while and they probably cost too much. Also dont think you should use the type with flux in the middle use solid core solder and a toothpic to dab a bit of flux on the 'pad' where the pin goes.

check first if those pins are actually used for something other than power or gnd. chances are the cpu might just work in that case.
to fix it you could put a thin wire into the socket and the cpu on top

how did you break the pins off?

depending which pins are broken, you could try a 7w soldering iron. Theres something else you could use thats meant for more precise soldering jobs, but I cant remember what its called.

He didnt. Some other goob who's name I won't mention did. (:nutkick: How ya like that one!) Anyways good luck with that project Sneeky! I want pics when you're done!

Maybe you can find a way to use this in your quest;

The data sheet says it bonds metal and is designed for electrical conduction, many types with diff temperature ranges.
Maybe drill a pin sized hole (shallow dimple) into the pad and glue a pin in with this stuff.

I think this is the step you should try.
good idea

no disrespect towards anyone helping me....i just think putting 2 wires in the socket is well not such a good idea. Hell it may be what i end up doing anyways, but I think I'd rather it was a solid contact. Hopefully this way i can get the cpu out if needed without having to worry about if the pins are out ,or if i could even get them out.

Just make sure the wires are just the right length.
Turn the mobo upside-down to get them out.

Sorry for the large pic ,pic editing software is on the fritz.....I fixed 'er boys!!!!!!!!!! Took the suggestion of puttin wire in the socket, after many solder attempts. Sweet easy fix and it wasn't even very difficult. Some wire cutters, needlenose pliers, and some24 gauge gold coated copper wire. Thanks for all the help and after my lady get a PSU in this thing we shall see better numbers I hope!

A buddy of mine had it and dropped it when changing chips....there was like ten bent pins. I unbent the pins and found 2 missing. He couldnt fix it or RMA it , so he sent it to me to see if I could get some use out of her!!!!!

LOL yes a free Opty 165 and he had it to 3.2GHz B4 he broke it. Now time to get the PSU I've been putting off until I knew if she'd boot. Now my second PC may be as good or better than my main rig.
It's allready hands down better than the X2 4600 that was in there!

i say put the 165 in your main rig and your 170 in your secondary...

Wouldn't be that bad of an idea, but those pins are already in the ABIT socket....lol
After all this time I think I'll just leave well enough alone!
