Ok, the time has come to change to dual core. Finally.
As the prices of Opterons are falling here, i was looking at a 170, but would it be better to get a 175, 180, 185?? I would want the best one to o/c and fit into my system (see specs).

I will upgrding the cooler to maybe a thermalright or a liquidcooling solution.

:toast:

Prices falling? Really? Only if it's on Ebay, S939 processors, especially the X2s have gone UP in price, as everyone frantically tries to find a quick upgrade, before they're forced to go AM2/LGA775.
Anyhu, I guess highest speed grade you can afford, is usually the best to get, and this is probably no different. Just see what you can afford, and what you can find, and get the CPU with the highest stock speed.

Yes the 4400 + 4800 (£160) are very exspensive and indeed gone up in price, i have seen the 165@ £65 and seen the 185@ £115 and the others are in-between those prices.

Holy crap, I bought my X2 4200+ at the cheapest I had ever seen it (£80 or something at OcUK a while back).
Oh well, the 185 would probably be the best bet, since you'll be getting a higher multiplier, so greater flexibility for overclocking.
Great prices for them, and I'm kinda jealous.

I remember paying £80 for my 144:eek: I was thinking it is better to get the highest opteron affordable too as at stock it is 2.6 (185)..............not to sure how they o/c as i dont know anyone who has one. Most people have 165, 170 and get them between 2.7-3ghz.

Well, the 144, is what, 1.8GHz stock right?
My 3000+ that I got when I first did this build, was 1.8GHz stock, S939, mid-range even for that point in time. Ran me £95. Nearly ripped my hair out when I saw the pricing on them after X2s came out not long afterward.
