View Full Version : Need new headphones

Okay, basically I haven't got any that work. My stock iPod ones, only one phone works, and I need some new ones.

I need some advice one which ones to get, I've read some reviews on the new iPod In Ear ones and some say they're amazing and fantastic and some say they suck.

Anybody got some suggestions? I plan to go out in these and move about a little... some light football and what not.

For the moment I'm not going to put on a massive price range... about £20. :D

I bought the Apple iPod In Ear Headphones for freakin' £25 and they SUCK.

Waste of money don't EVER buy them.

Also: Bump??! Still need some..

Buy some Sennheiser PMX60s, wrap around, not in-ear, but they're comfortable for me (I have large ears, and so in-ear ones can get annoying if they're small)
Great sound quality, but no in-line volume controller, but at least cheap, about £20 last I saw them.
Basically, stick with the Sennheiser street range I say, good value, good quality (been using Senns for a few years)

Logitech has some good ones. I personally use their Stereo Gaming Headset. The bass is great and I can almost always tell where enemies are...hehe...I picked my pair up at my local Best Buy for around $20.

I'm not very fond of the wrap around type ear phones to be honest. Look like a 'tard when I go out :p

I prefer these type of headphones:

I have some regular iPod ones but only one side works. They have good bass and I like that. I'm wondering if there's any better ones for the same £19.99 price tag, or if I should just stick with another pair.

I don't know how it is over there but we don't use gaming headsets on the street :wtf:

OH OH I'M SORRY!!! Didn't know that's what you wanted em for!! :p In that case....Creative Labs has some good ones...I used those for such a long time and would still be using them if they hadn't started crackling.

Ah, well, wrap arounds for me are fine, I look like a 'tard anyhow.
Still, I recommend Senns. Street and Sport ranges are mostly in-ear phones, and look comfortable.
Example:
http://www.advancedmp3players.co.uk/shop/product_info.php?products_id=1344
Those are the Senn MX50s, very cheap, and probably not worth much, but if you're looking to spend very little, they're a good option I guess.

http://www.advancedmp3players.co.uk/shop/Headphones.6/Sennheiser.48/LX70SPORT/Sennheiser_LX_70_Sport_Earphones.1357.html
More expensive, but look more comfortable, and probably better alround.

I dunno about how good that site is, I just found it on google.

If you cba to wait, then... Argos has some decent 'phones, heheh. If you go there, stick to Sonys I say.

I've just noticed that on my one remaining working headphone on the original iPod headphones, when I listen to "I Think They Like Me (So So Def Remix)" (lol don't judge me :p) the bass is the same level all the way through, but if I plug in my Logitech Internet Chat Headset, the bass tones get higher and lower (like they should). I think I need some decent street headphones that can actually replicate what the sound SHOULD sound like.

So these will sound better than my stock iPod ones for such a low price?

I'll raise my bar to £25 'cos I really need some decent ones in the style I showed above :p No point listening to music if it sounds wrong...

Ripper3

I've never used iPod headphones for my own music, and my own MP3 player to compare (I've got a Sony NWA1000... DONT JUDGE ME EITHER!), so I can't say, but to be fair, you should look at the specs, and compare to the iPod headphones' specs. You'll probably be able to find them somewhere. Possibly on that site, I dunno.
This is like choosing keyboard and mouse, you should really try before you buy.

Trouble is when you buy headphones they won't take them back. As I found out with these shitty new iPod In Ear ones...

Earphones are a great way to kill your hearing. Get some cans from Sennheiser, Grado, or Sony.

Sennheiser PX100s maybe. What's your budget?

Casheti

My budget is £25.

What are some UK retailers with headphones?

Casheti
06-15-2007, 03:33 PM
Uhhmmm...

Argos, Comet, PC World, Currys. I think that's about it.

I think for the time being I'll concentrate on what to get rather than where. Then I can go from there.

Okay I got the specs for these ones from Apple:

http://images.apple.com/ipod/images/specsearbuds20060912.png

* Earphones
* Frequency response: 20Hz to 20,000Hz
* Impedance: 32 ohms

Not sure if they're any use.

I wanted some sites to look at prices. What is your budget in US dollars?

For low-mid-range headphones, people really like Sennheiser. I have some HD202 Pros that are pretty damn good. For more portable circumstances, the PX100s are highly revered and reasonably priced. There are some PXC150s that cancel noise for about $70.

Ripper3

£25 is nearly $50

I'm really looking for earphones rather than ones that go over your head.

Like these:

http://www.techdevils.com/images/td_earphones1.jpg This type of earphone is what I'm looking for, but with decent quality, and ones that don't keep falling out.

I bought these earlier today and they can BURN IN HELL! http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore?productLearnMore=M9394G/B

You can try PMX60s at some retailers. Try the iPod section. They absolutely love those headphones.
The PX100s are at a good price point, and are decent 'phones. If you can get past the lookin' like a 'tard feeling that you currently have, you'd probably be better off with them.

EDIT: Ah, took too long to post, then maybe disregard...

Casheti

Sorry, but I'm adamant about earphones like the ones I previously showed you all :p

Ripper3

Wait a minute... I forgot, you'd want to be able to hide them so no-one can see you use them in class... that's probably the main reason in-ear headphones are still so damned popular.

GJSNeptune
06-15-2007, 03:59 PM
They're called earphones or inner-earphones. Headphones go on your head. See the difference?

There are studies about earphones, and how most people play them too loudly. And for longer than fifteen minutes, hearing can start to become damaged. Not worth it in my book.

Ripper3
06-15-2007, 04:01 PM
I know, I know, no need to be so damned harsh, it's just a stupid habit.
I use headphones normally rather than earphones, both normally and in conversation.

GJSNeptune

Apple's price are not proportional to quality.

In fact, they have to have ridiculous prices to pay for their marketing department. Somehow they still manage a profit. :D

Ripper3
06-15-2007, 05:08 PM
Harsh? Listening to Lenny Kravitz harsh?

No, nowhere near.
Lenny Kravitz's voice and music in general breaks diamonds.

Apple's newer computers are getting more evenly priced, and the Mac Book Pro is better value than some PC laptops. Look better too, but tis true, they overcharge for a lot of the things you'd expect to be either cheap, or free.

GJSNeptune

$750 to bring 2GB to 4GB. Fucking ridiculous.

Ripper3
06-15-2007, 05:23 PM
Definatly an example of their bad pricing... especially as DDR2 is dirt cheap now. I've seen 4GB RAM kits over here for ~£150, maybe even less.
Laptop kits cost more, but not THAT much more.

What do you guys reckon to these?

Casheti
06-16-2007, 10:45 PM
Okay I picked up some Sony MDR-EX71SL's and I think they're great. But I have 2 bits of beef.

The left one keeps slowly sliding out and I can hear the bass dying as it comes away from my ear.

Second, why the heck is the wire for the left earphones 4x shorter than the right one...?

Other than that, well worth the £29.99

Ripper3
06-16-2007, 10:50 PM
The wires are different sizes, as the wire is meant to go around the back of the neck for the right earbud, and your left ear may be a little larger in terms of opening than your right one, or else the wire is pulling the earbud out, because of... actually, can't think of a reason why, but might be, as teh wire is shorter n all.

Casheti
06-16-2007, 10:53 PM
Hmm even when I'm sitting still it tends to slide out, I might just have to put a one size bigger bud on the left one.

Edited due to irrelevance..

Ripper3
06-16-2007, 11:03 PM
They will be different, and most likely, better, and the jack will be different on them, like you said, they have a microphone, so an extra contact on the jack would be needed, or a proprietary connecter, therefore, they'd be different, so you'd spend £6 on buying something that you wouldn't be able to use, and even if you could use it, would be useless, compared to your new earphones

Casheti
06-16-2007, 11:05 PM
So why are the Sony Erricson's so much cheaper if you think they're better?

Ripper3
06-16-2007, 11:12 PM
Woops, sorry, got myself into a curfuffel there.
I think MY brain is crapping out.
Yours will be better, just like the headphones freely given with MP3 players and other mobile phones, 3rd party ones are always, or nearly always, better (my Sony MP3 player had some pretty decent ones, matched my brother's £30 Sony 'phones, which was nice)

Casheti
06-16-2007, 11:13 PM

Casheti

Tried all the sizes and left one still keeps sliding out. I'm just getting pissed off now..

Ripper3
06-17-2007, 12:33 PM
That's why headphones are better, they don't slip off unless you place them incorrectly or you have an irregular sized head, heheh

Casheti
06-17-2007, 12:57 PM
Yea but in ear has better sound cos they're right inside :p

I think I fixed it now..

Ripper3
06-17-2007, 01:57 PM
You could try getting a piece of sellotape and sticking it to the outside of your ear, or get superglue, and glue the earphones in :p definately wont fall out then. But, may have trouble washing, or replacing if they fail, or if you want new ones

ex_reven
06-17-2007, 02:44 PM
get some cheapy headphones from your local electronics/games store
Im using sony headphones, i had the same problem as you with my ipod headphones..just stopped working in one ear. So I bought them for cheap - $15 to $20

Dont worry about "audio quality" in headphones, as long as you stick to a brand name and a mainstream pair of headphones it should be all good. Dont go for the cans/ear muff type headphones or someone will probably punch you in the back of the head for being a tool :p.
