System it going in would be a 3800 AMD 64 athlon ,2 gigs ram, 160 gig SATA , 250 gig WD IDE not sure on this drive, Windows XP Pro maybe Vista after service pack one , Samsung 17 LCD Monitor.

I will probley uograde the processor later to a dual core 4200 939 AMD. Would a opteron run better for gaming.

OK, If you have a monitor that's 1600x1200 - get the 640MB to be future proof
If you have a monitor lower than that get the 320MB and you'll be very happy.
The 8800GTS 640MB beats the HD 2900XT in most things so forget about the HD 2600XT.
Hope that helped.

However if you can afford the 640MB version..... It would be kind of cool whatever resolution you're playing at.

What amperage is your PSU?

Your CPU will bottleneck bad with any new card! I would go with high X2 or Opty, im not AMD fan so dont really know?

Go Opty all the way and OC that SOB. The only opty system I've built went straight to 250 fsb with NO voltage changes. Just hit 250 FSB, F10 (save and exit), buddy says its his main rig with no issues ~12 months now.

EDIT:

Get the processor now, video card later.....They DONT MAKE SOCKET 939 anymore (EOL). So they will slowly get hard to find and more expensive

You'll probably get the 640 for around ~$200 by this winter.
