Intel has released a BIOS patch for Windows machines running Core 2 and Xeon 3000/5000 chips that addresses potential unpredictable system behavior. The Microsoft website describes the patch as:
A microcode reliability update is available that improves the reliability of systems that use Intel processors. This article describes how to download this update.
It is available for all Windows XP, Server 2003 and Vista system, no matter if 32-bit or 64-bit. It does not seem to be critical enough to offer it as a security update and it does require a "Genuine Advantage" check.

I don't see anything on the Microsoft page that implies it is for Core 2 and Xeon 3k/5k chips only.

It's not technically only for them, but it's meant for them I'd guess.
I believe Slashdot had an article yesterday or the day before about the C2D's problems, and about a fix from Intel. I'll see if I can find it and post it.

hmm..perhaps its like the AMD Dual core optimizer update for games. Or it makes ocing more stable in the bios and allows a bit higher oc?

People don't update programs like this if you are NOT having a problem. This update does not imply nor suggest a performance boost. :toast:

Even though The Inquirer isn't your most reliable source, it's explained well enough. If your comp has crashed and you got one of them Intels, then this might be your solution.
I wouldn't know cuz I a all warm and fuzzy with my AMD X2 4200+.:toast:
