I had one of my clients come up to me today and asked what kind of anit-virus program i recommended for his new computer? I gave him my opinion on Av and other programs alike, i said for me its not really nessacry, ive never used a AV type program or any spyware removel crap..ive been using windows xp pro sp2, and had no problems whats so ever. I was wondering if anybody felt the same, the media bascially brained-washed a ton of its consumers, inthinking just because you have high speed internet, the virus/ or w/e is going to go to your computer fast...no it wont.

its always good to have some sort of av software. Even if you do everything possible to prevent something, eventually, through no fault of your own, you might get infected. Id personally have one av program and ifyou have a router, you dont need a firewall :)

i would say so, at least something free for detection, i mean, viruses are semi common if you visit sites besides big known sites, aka. yahoo, google (but no clicking links), TPU, probably playboy, usually. however, if their servers happen to get hacked.....you could still get a virus, all in all it's in your best interest to get av, but it's not absolutely necessary.
I don't use an antivirus or a firewall. If I notice something wrong with my computer or it's acting slow, I open up the task manger, and if I see anything malicious, I do a free online scan to find it's location, then go into safe mode and delete it.

I use a/v software "on call" for checking specific files I have d/l'ed off of the internet, but I don't leave it running. I do have ZoneAlarm installed as a firewall, which of course I leave running.
comodo personnal firewall most of the time in allow all, nod32, adaware
works for me, nod is vbery usefull to clean my pen drives that get a lot of virus in univ

nod32 or kaspersky for the antivirus, xoftxpySE or ad-aware 2007 for spyware.
Not kidding, i get upto 10 email viruses a day, and i do get hack attempts over the internet from certain IP addresses.
Its not like the old days where you could just be smart about clicking .exe files, some of these shites will run and infect you over the network and you'd never even know - but there they are, eating your data.
Most notably, i've had
Tenga.gen - Eats all full-access network shares, corrupting .exe files
Helkern/Slammer - sure its an old one that doesnt really affect home PC's, but it certainly loves spamming into my PC over the net and TRYING to do something. (This ones blocked by kasperskys firewall before it hits, and i think this virus was the one letting tenga.gen in)

i do have a firewall for my router. what kind of "free" av's do you recommend, i didnt want my client to watse his money on norton or mcfee crap. But another way, besides open task-manger to see if any slow-down, is regedit, i know what im doing in regedit...

I like AOL Active Virus Shield for free AV. It's a reskinned Kaspersky. The EULA leaves a little to be desired, but despite that, I have it running on a few family member's machines with no problems what so ever.
I think AV is necessary for average computer users. You don't even have to click anything to get a virus these days. They can be embedded in simple ad banners, and fly-by install themselves.

General rule of thumb: if you download porn or warez, You MUST have one.

I use AVG and have a router with in-built firewall. I also use Ad-Aware and Spybot for spyware removal, but they only ever get run a couple times over a 6 month period. They aren't unneccesary, but they are no where near as neccessary as they want you to believe.

that PC doesnt even have a web browser installed, its a gaming PC without even any ports forwarded to the net. You'd think the viruses would go for my netbox, but nooooo - they want the other one.

Haven't used Anti-virus or Spyware removal on my Windows for years. The last one I used was PC-Cillin that came with my ECS K7S5A back when an AXP 1700+ was hot stuff.
And still not a single problem. :rockout:
(This comment is not being a sarcastic LOLO OS X LOLO)

I honestly love the fact that I never have had to worry about A/V, and likely never will have to worry, from last January on.
Consider it blind faboy-ism all you want, but just sit back and read posts like this. And people wonder why I love using OS X for daily use? I can browse anywhere worry free. AV programs will never taint my system, let alone a virus!
Its like god mode in Doom 3. You can just sit back and giggle as you run around chain saw'ing everything.
Thats cause 90% of people are on Windows, so virus people make viruses for windows.
OSX needs direct x :( though, I wonder what those games look like in OpenGL...

Doesn't change the fact that I'm AV+virus free.
Parallels supports direct X and Vmware fusion is getting there. A lot of games work virtualized now, so its only going to get better.
Expect a review soon ;)

AV programs will never taint my system, let alone a virus! Why would I call you a fanboy? Don't you see me defending Macs and OS X all the time? Don't forget I own both a Core2 20" iMac and a PowerMac G5. (And just sold a 17" Widescreen G4 iMac). When it comes to anything but gaming and watching soft-subbed video files, it's OS X, ftw, for me. :rockout:

I have a hard time believing something that makes it non trial, would be legal...:wtf:
Especially considering they sell a subscription for updates.

it is
afaik changing a registry setting on your putter is legal right?

If you want legal Solaris, try AOL Active Virus Shield. http://www.activevirusshield.com/antivirus/freeav/index.adp?
It's a reskinned Kaspersky AV.
http://www.nsaneproductions.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=1966
you just have to run this after installing (don't reboot), install then reboot :)
ps: if a mod thinks it's illegal to post this pm me to take it, or take it yourself ;)

To my knowledge, applying a simple value to your registry is 100%
LEGAL. I, nor you, have modified any of ESET's files. Meaning, this
FiX is perfectly legal and you are breaking NO laws by using it. ;)

if you alter your registry to bypass WGA, thats breaking the law. i dont see how this is any different.

yeah i've used the nod32 fix. Its modifying a registry entry and not a file itself - therefore it IS legal. A little dubious however.

i never altered the registry to bypass the wga, but if you change your damn registry on your damn putter, why the hell should it be illegal?, you don't even change their files :banghead:

I've tried out the AOL one - its basically kaspersky 6.0 with only file and email scanners. VERY good for a free scanner - i've converted two of my PC's over to it for testing, seems great so far.

Despite how easy it is, its still considered DRM.
Breaking any form of DRM is illegal.
