I have Road Runner in NYC right now, and when it works its fast but I've had too many problems over the years and am considering getting a new ISP. I honestly don't know what a better option would be. I consider Verizon FIOS but its not in my area and won't be for close to a year from what the people at Verizon tell me. I don't want DSL, I'd like to stick with cable, but don't know what are the better/reliable providers that I should look at. If anyone has any input on the topic I'd appreciate it.
Edit: I used to be turned off to DSL but I was looking at EarthLink and they offer 6 mbps service for 39.95, whereas their cable service is 41.95 for 5 mbps, and 72.95 a month for 8mbps...maybe DSL would be a good choice?

The Verizon FIOS is garbage. My friend is using it and so far he has experienced slow downs on each occasion. I am currently using Earthlink 15Mb and i do not have any type of problems. Though the best for the whole city of NY is Optimum that is if you are in their specific territory (remember the cable providers go by territory).

Optimum isn't available in my area, I'll probably be doing with earthlink. I entered my info and the only two options available to me in my area are both DSL and Cable rated both at 5.0 mbps, both with similar pricing...should I go for the DSL or Cable?

Try finding out how many people there are using an Cable modem. The more the worse for you because the cable connection is shared between a few users. (i happen to be on the very edge of 2 territories that separate and i get really good connection because there are very few people here in my area that use Earthlink.

That stinks. In my neck of the woods, FIOS is almost flawless.

Hey i am not criticizing the tech....i just base my assumption from what others have told me. And almost all people i know here in NY say that FIOS is no faster than the regular DSL line of Verizon.
