Well here in September ill be turning 18 and i wanted to ask for a pistol for my birthday. I cant legally own a pistol until im 21, but i can buy a rifle. I don't really want a rifle, they would be fun but i would prefer some kind of pistol I just want to do target shooting, punching holes in paper and other items, so that leads me to a .22lr, but i wouldnt mind something larger such as a .45 ACP 1911.

here are two choices i would like
http://www.impactguns.com/store/698958002513.html i have shot this gun before and i liked it.
also...
http://www.impactguns.com/store/798681303496.html i heard that sig makes very high quality guns...

if i were to choose a higher caliber pistol i was looking at this one...
http://www.impactguns.com/store/725327601029.html i heard that this is very high quality for the price. best bang for your buck for a 1911.

i dont really like glocks, and if i have to go to a higher caliber than a .22lr i want a .45 1911. thanks...

Out of those guns I'd deffinately take the p22. If you want a big gun, I'd put my life at stake with a S&W 357, and I do! I have a thing for Baretta .40 cal's too.

Sig makes EXCELLENT pistols. The glock 9mm is also a good pistol, but stay away from the .45's, they are not of the same quality as the 9mm is.

Tried them both , they rock.
However the Desert Eagle is an Class on its own, but its too expensive :P

Desert Eagle is a stupid weapon to choose, ammo is way too expensive and the gun is too heavy as well... Its not very practical; if you needed to defend yourself or go out shooting, you wouldn't get anything unless your practicsed...

I'd say a Glock to get you used to shooting and stuff, then later on a Sig or a USP.

Not to mention that you need pretty large hands to even hold the gun

im not very fond of glocks, i have shot a glock 21 and a glock 19 before, and i feel they arnt that accurate and they are just too boxy. like i said i just want to be punching holes in paper, so i could 500rds of .22lr for the same price as 50rds of .45 or 9mm. But my dad wants to get a bigger, more fun, caliber, he wants a .45. which is why i woud like the 1911 because of its historical background and i think that thing looks amamzing.

heck why a deagle when a 500 smith and wesson is avialabe :p

but i would rather have a pistol than a revolver, and i wanted someting 600$ or cheaper. plus later on i was planning on getting a sliencer for the gun. here its like a 200$ tax ontop of the sliencer, and you have to do a bunch of paper work. but i think it would be amazing. that sig mosquito, you said you shot it? how was it. ive been looking at that one for a whilen now.

here is a link i just found...
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=48142569888315477&q=Sig+Mosquito&total=12&start=0&num=10&so=0&type=search&plindex=1

thats the only one i can find a mosquito with a supressor...

If you're gonna buy a Desert Eagle, you might as well go all the way and get some grenades and bombs too :)

Glock makes some of the best pistols IMO. Taurus seem to do pretty good for the money though. SIG are great aswell... but you need a higher caliber :)

I hold 3 FFL's (Federal Firearms License)
1) to both manufacture and sell firearm
2) to manufacture amunition
3) to manufacture and sell explosives

That said here's my thoughts, waite till your 21 then buy one. Use someone elses with them present for now. To have someone buy one for you knowing you are not abe to legaly own it is called a "straw perchase" weather it's family or not, it's a felony! For the both of you. If an accident should happen, your both fried. Pluss your not by law alowed to poses or transport it by your self in the first place.

Other than that... for target, look into a .22 for something to start with. They are the cheapest thing on the market to shoot all day, and not get worn out on. Work on marksman ship first, get that sorted out, then move into something bigger. Check out the target modles in either a Browning Buckmark, or a Ruger Mrk III.

if you want to do target shooting your best bet would be to get a 22. .45 ammo isn't cheap i've heard!

of your 3 choices, i would get the sig!

I would also go to a store with the guns you like and hold them and see which one feels the best. It's really about what gun fits your hand best, not what looks better.

This is also a major fellony!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If cought with one ANYWHERE in the US with out a licence you will be charged under FEDERAL ruling, for atempt to commit MURDER! Weather it's mounted or not.

I say 1911 all the way. Massive stopping power for when you can carry, simple and reliable design, cheap aftermarket parts.

One of my best friends bought a cheap Para-ordinance 1911, then added a bar-sto match grade barrel, a cut-down hammer, night-sites, and a lighter trigger assembly, all for less than the cost of a similarly equipped Kimber Arms 1911. It's a 5" barrel model, and shoots a 3" grouping at 50yds with no professional tuning. Once he gets a few more parts, it should be even better.

(Can anyone tell I'm a 1911 fan? lol)

Desert Eagles are way over-rated, especially as a carry weapon. Ammo is expensive and they weigh a ton. Right around 8lbs. Completely useless in a real world situation where quickly drawing your weapon means the difference between life and death. It's roughly equivalent to trying to quick-draw a gallon jug of milk.

Also, violent crime is very rampant in some parts of the US. Many feel it's better safe than sorry.

according to a study i saw, america has the 1st place for yearly death's with gunshots, followed by germany but with a big difference
Portugal is way down on the bottom :p
why is there so many violent crimes? :S

This guy knows what he's on about :rockout:
I totally agree with the .22 long rifle idea, ammo will cost you so much less than larger calibres, the difference in cost between the .22 and the 9mm is noticible, ESPECIALLY if you shoot regularly. Its also good to start with because it hones down the other factors that cause you to miss your target when target shooting. Low weight, slim profile and low recoil enable you to practice your technique rather than getting used to the gun. You will learn to trigger-pull correctly, maximise your accuracy through breathing and you will be able to adjust mistakes you are making when gripping the gun. A slight nudge of the gun caused by your trigger finger can set your bullet up to a foot off target, thats why its good to develop your technique first before selecting more "exotic" weapons.

Note the desert eagle video, the kids holding it with both hands because not only is it heavy but its difficult to control the recoil. Its alot easier to control a pistol using a single hand, as a second hand adds to the amount of wobble and causes a difference in grip when shooting. Im using a old Smith and Wesson .22LR atm, and it still performs very well. I can see my improvement every time I use it.

Yeah, on second thought, as much as I adore a good 1911, a .22 is a better starting point. Both .22s are also double action, whereas a 1911 is a single. To carry a SA and have it ready to fire, it has to be cocked and then the safety engaged(AKA: Cocked, locked and ready to rock). Many people are uncomfortable with that idea. Most people I know, that are just starting, are much more comfortable with a DA.

Another thing, .22LR is much less prone to jamming.
Jamming doesnt occur often, but when it does, its a pain in the ass, and it causes safety issues on the range. Ive seen a guy about my age that I used to meet at the pistol club and once when he jammed he treated the gun as if it wasnt loaded, holding it across the range instead of safely pointing it down towards the target. If it discharged, someone could have been hurt.

You find that in guns that jam less often, they have stiff springs in their mags. Which makes it harder to load if your in the 12-14 year old range because it requires a bit of pressure to pull the spring down (At least thats what was the case with the S&W i used).

thanks for the info, first off this would be in my dads name, its not illegal if i were to shoot it as long as hes there? or what are the rules with that. also i dont plan on getting a silencer unless i do it legally. all that i had heard is that you need to pay a 200$ tax and do a bunch of paperwork, if thats it for a license or do you know if i need to take classes? yeah my top choice is the sig. and i already have bb guns, an anics skif a-3000 co2 pistol and a crossman rifle, but it just doesnt do it for me. not the real deal.

just looked this up... from wiki...
In the United States, it is legal in thirty-five of the fifty states for an individual to possess and use a suppressor; however, one must go through the National Firearms Act process administered by the BATFE. Such transfers also require a federal tax payment of two hundred dollars and a thorough background check. Since suppressors are inexpensive to build, with models retailing in other countries for under US$40[1], the licensing and transfer tax restrictions result in suppressors being very expensive in the U.S., with similar models selling for US$400[2] not including transfer fees. Some states and municipalities explicitly ban any civilian possession of suppressors.

Im not too sure if it applies the same over there, but you typically need a license to be able to buy, store, transport and fire a firearm. To fire the firearm you can have a juniors permit or a probationary licence whereby you can handle firearms (but not buy or store them).

You need a full licence to be able to transport, buy and store the firearms which you can only get when your 18 years of age over here. As such I currently have a probationary licence, as I am 17.

With regards to silencers, from what I've read and heard, theyr totally not worth it.
Firstly, silencers are illegal over here, probably legal where you are though. But secondly, are you aware how silencers work? Silencers have numerous channels that the sound travels into and is subsequently "muffled" or "absorbed" by a certain medium (probably some special type of material like a fabric) stuffed into each of these channels that line the sides of the silencer. If what ive heard is correct, you periodically have to replace these materials because literally each shot will degrade the medium and reduce the silencers performance.
Subsequently, I dont own (or wish to own) one.

Guys, the Desert Eagle is a gun that what it shoots it destroys...Its expensive, hard to use and heavy...Not to mention recoil although for its size it aint that much.
On the other hand its all about taste. A friend of mine got the same weapons that lara croft used in Tomb Raider 2 and the Cradle Of Life. Awesome guns, but dont remember brand and make :P

Those are Colt 1911's with compensators and a few other modifications.

Wile your a great guy but Taurus is to SIG and Glock as a Camero is to a Corevette. Taurus is a knock off gun designed to cheaper a solution , it's good gun but not considered top quality. Trust me I know. I have had several pointed at me LOL. Still Taurus is a good gun.

Isnt the Taurus just a remake of the popular 1911 original? Ive seen numerous remakes of that design, some of which are apparently used by pistol marksmen.
