View Full Version : My crazy internets!

Alright my internet is crazy and I can't figure it out. On my desktop, it says "limited or no connection." I don't understand why because my laptop is doing just fine and it's running off the wireless connection to my wireless router, whereas my desktop is wired to the same router. So my question is, why am I not getting a connection with my wired connection on the same router as my wirelessly connected laptop?

perhaps bad cable, make sure your dhcp settings are set to automatic detect IP.

I am guessing you alsoo have the lan cable plugged in too?

Yeah everything's plugged in. It's like it just happened all of a sudden, though. I had a connection on it for a few days and then just last night it started giving me that limited or no connection message and I couldn't connect to the internet. I double checked the cable and it is plugged in. I even uninstalled and reinstalled the ethernet drivers.

make sure your dhcp settings are set to automatic detect IP.

It is.

reset cable modem or dsl modem and reset router do this by unplugging and wait 30 seconds then plug back in and try again.

Yeah, I did already. But how does that explain why my laptop gets a wireless connection and my desktop doesn't get the wired? You think it would be the other way around if anything...

your ethernet card or the onboard ethernet failed, try another card or try yours in a friends computer.

it could even be as simple as a bad wire between the computer and the modem so replace that first.

reconfigure your router and desktop as if you just bought them.
You may have accidently dodged up the settings. If that doesnt work, id suggest its a hardware problem - as keakar mentioned.

check to make sure your firewall isn't turned on. If it is it will tell you you've got limited to no conection. with out having any other type of security turned on.

Hey demonbrawn,

sucks not having internets doesnt it :P

umm check to make sure that nothing happened to your cable also.. like could you have pinched it somewhere?

i have seen badly configured home-made cables, they will show slight connection, but nothing will work right...

if you have a spare cable, would recommend trying that...

also, make sure that nothing went bad in the router, i guess a person recommended reconfiguring it but something can easily be skipped over

terrible to here internets are down... thats never a good day...

Yeah, I did already. But how does that explain why my laptop gets a wireless connection and my desktop doesn't get the wired? You think it would be the other way around if anything...Not necessarily. Happens to me all the time. That just means only one component of your router's software failed. (Much the same way when only 1 or 2 services fail in Windows at times, yet everything else remains normal). If resetting the router worked, just shrug and move on. lol

Thanks for everyone's help. I wish I would've had time to check everything out before I left for work this morning. Oh well, I'll swap out the cables first when I get back and see from there.

Okay, I swapped cables, restarted the cable modem and router, then reset router and I'm still not getting a connection. I connected my laptop to the router using an ethernet cable and it worked for the laptop. What's goin on with my computer then?

Try reinstalling your ethernet drivers. Perhaps they corrupted somehow.

im going to have to go with wile on this one, sounds like driver issue, or as someone earlier said could be the card itself, or is it integrated?

whichever it is, if you dont get a response from a driver reinstall then i think the only option that is left is hardware issue...

demonbrawn

Yeah, it's integrated. I tried the driver reinstall and still nothing. I hope so badly that it's not a hardware issue. I don't want to have to RMA my mobo right now............. I'll easily reformat my hard drive in hopes that it will alleviate any driver issues before I deal with an RMA.

if reinstalling drivers didnt do anything, i dont think a clean install would do much better... something else could be too, uninstall/reinstall anything that has to do with networking in the OS?

if i may ask also, what are you using for antivirus? does it include firewall?

you don't have to RMA your motherboard. you could just buy a ethernet card that plugs into pci-e or pci and use that.

yea, but if his MOBO is new, why not RMA it, i mean if it aint right, might as well get it right.......
