i saw that many people is ready to throw microsoft on fire and their software in hell but i don't understand why
my thought in a form of a question is : why all this hate for microsoft everyone is free to choose any os or software they want ?
apple has osx no one really likes it(this is why bootcamp exist and i have see more people on a apple use windows but not a lot of people want os x on theyr pc),
the linux is the best os ever stable fast low on resources editable yet a very small amount of people use it(and this is dump why to pay for os and office when it free and really good)
why the old and absolete war of OS still breaks computer society?????????
p.s.this is because i still see a lot of people use microsoft products yet they say it's the worst, and the iphone (which i thing as a stupid box)is like the messiah of cellphones despite it's fault's

People don't like change. A true computer user triple boots or has multiple virtual machines at the ready, all the time.
You have to seperate the general public's opinions from the facts. (Especially so, because the general public is uneducated on topics, and biased from market share)
If you look at any of the OS's, they are all just as capable as the other.
Office apps? All 3 have them. All 3 have free versions. All 3 have pay for versions.
Games? Borderline. This is based on preferences, Windows with an edge due to popularity, and OS X tagging along because it has something linux lacks- drivers and a reliable userbase.
Professional apps? Linux is especially strong in servers, OS X in artistic fields, and Windows in the CAD area.
Should you decide to do something other OS's stress on an alternative? Its perfectly viable, and a lot of the apps are cross platform now. Photoshop. Dreamweaver.)
All you have to do is research how, and where the programs exist.
As for every day use, people will either use whats accessible to them, or what is preferable to them.
Its trivial to find someone that will do one of the following: 1.) Crap on all things linux. 2.) Crap on all things Apple. 3.) Crap on all things microsoft.
OS of choice is no longer defined by what they do. They are defined by how they do it.

I have no real preference between operating systems, as every user and computer is different.
For a very low-power computer/ a computer I just want basic functionality from, I'll burn a Kubuntu CD.
For a Mac, I'll use OS X. While OS X is limited, it's stable, fast, and clean. If there was a version of OS X I could put on PC's, I would probably use it in the same way as I would use Ubuntu.
For a high-end/recent PC, or a PC I want general ease of use and power from, I think it's worth every penny to buy a Windows license. Windows is being criticized because it's expensive and sometimes craps out. However...the people that criticize Windows are either *nix gurus who can do all they want to on a free copy of Debian, or people that have never tried a free/alternative OS.

Fixed. ;)
Ease of use is a matter of preference, not a one size fits all. :)
Some may consider doing everything via command line ease of use

Actually the office argument isn't really true. If you use VBA a lot OpenOffice, StarOffice or WhateverOffice won't cut it.
Personally I've played with many OS's out of curiosity, Linux is far from my favorite. I'd go for OS/2/EcomStation, BeOS/Zeta. They're just lovely and very powerful.

There are always the stupid exceptions.
But building a whole set of things on something like that I would definatly not suggest.. I have seen it done... and have had to fix it.. 80+MB in office 97.
And they removed lotus features in 2003... :banghead:
I would use linux, but I like a good UI :p

I wouldn't call VBA a stupid exception. If you seriously use Office it's quite an important part of Office. Not everyone settles for writing a letter. Access and Excel for example love VBA.

I've used OS X, and I've used a number of *nix versions. However for what I want and need, Windows is the best. True, there were times where I wanted to throw my disc out of the windows, however after doing a lot of reading and research (mainly here I might add) I can now deal with most problems (and if not I'll just post here) that Windows throws my way.
I can see why people would like an OS that is completely stable and has no bugs what so ever, but I don't have anything really important on my PC, and I love to take things apart, see how they work and put them back together. So an OS that is NOT completely perfect (which none of them are) is fine for me, as I will quite happily spend my time learning how to fix problem X. That's just me.
I can quite easily see why other people use *nix, or OS X, it does what they need, and they might not have the technical expertise, or willingness to learn, to fix any problems that arise, but for me, Windows FTW! :D

How does documentation make code work on another system?
Document how things work, so when a certain function is magically broken with a new version, you aren't left with a handful of mysterious outdated calls that in no way describe what they do.
Its a lot easier to rewrite if you aren't fluent in the previous language
Notes functions in office are just... WTF.

Its no more swiss army knife than linux and OS X are. Its just something everyone and their dog owns a copy of in comparison.
What can it do special?
If anything, linux is the swiss army knife. Is there anything that can't run it? iPods, microwaves, PLC's, Cars, phones, everything.

os x in itself is its own OS. Its a commercial product ;) Not unlike windows, aside from having a specific hardware set.
It varys from unix in that it contains a lot of apple specific designs and improvements(Aqua, core audio, quartz, Carbon, Cocoa, core animation, HFS+ and soon ZFS)

microsoft is "hated" so much because they are always selling you a car without wheels and telling you to be patient because updates are coming soon. software is never bug free but working properly would be nice.

It has its uses and I respect how universal it has become. It think it is wonderful to have a unified platform for most computers.

MS gets dirt because they are the biggest and most common, and our tendency to root for the little guy leads to suspicion of MS. They have also pioneered a number of business models (software as service, licensing restrictions, et cetera) which while perfectly valid from a business POV, have led to some disagreements at the time of their inception.
It should be noted that the reason MS is as big as it is is due to these business models; the first thing Gates did to make it big was restrict the licensing of MS-DOS, ensuring a continual stream of revenue to the company.

More of a Unix \ Linux person. More the later. Only reason i use Windows is DirectX for my gaming needs.
Why i pick Linux over Windows is due to my privicy were Windows just wants to record every thing thats done on your computer.
And whots put me more of Windows is there tricks they pull like with DX10 and say you need Vista. Well all i see at this time is MS shooting them selfs in the foot yet again.
I just hope late this year that OpenGL 3.0 kicks ass with it's DX10 features. And gives users more of a reason not have to go DX10 and having to pay a HIGH price for Vista.
Do i hate MS Umm Love Hate i'd say. They have some good ideas but a hell load more bad ones. And could not say i would care if MS lose the gaming community.

Linux games are pretty limited.. Normally UT games, ID Software games, and whatever you can get to work in Wine.
OS X games can be simply bought at the apple store, where you get everything else OS X related.
Or online ;)
Parallels for OS X supports 3d now, its somewhat limited but pretty effective and should improve. Wine for Linux. As far as "converters" go anyways.

I have 3 OSes at the moment on both my Laptop and Dekstop and i use them for different purposes each of them. I triple boot between, XP - Vista - Ubuntu (7.04) and i got used to work on all OS's though i would say that the only time i would disregard XP is when all of my programs work properly on Vista (which until this point they are not)

I used Debian for a long while then was writing articles on Linux for a site a few years back.
Linux has come a long way in the last few years for the average consumer, but most will still choose windows from brand recognition.
Again consider the "average" user believes almost anything told by them on TV as they are stupid, and probably have a illegal version of Windows cracked on another PC if they have more than one. They consider the cost of it too great for what the don't know they have. They will also have a spam bot or spyware running on their PC, and consider themselves a tech type if they can use most of their hardware or if it is new. Linux will be only or geeks and nerds, and they will be unaware that their system is s little turd compared to other computers, as well as servers. If they manage to find the management console they will christen themselves as genius. And will stare at the graphs on the performance monitor for hours wondering what it all means.
Basicly fucktards. With no idea of what is really happening. But they feel good.

EA has announced that they will be releasing PC and mac games in the future at the SAME time.
CNC3, NFSCarbon and many others are on their way from EA.
ID Software has always made native titles.
Other games, such as UT, AOE, Halo, ofcourse blizzard's stuff, and many others... you name it.
The only real exceptions are any games on STEAM, but valve is never getting my money anyways.
http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?s=topSellers&n=action_games&nnmm=browse&node=home%2Fmac_accessories%2Fsoftware
Prey, BF1942, CoD, CNC, Rise of nations, Wolf, MOH..
By no means a poor selection ;) Infact, its pretty much my whole library..:)
I'm sure the bigger games on windows now, will very soon be ported from someone like Macsoft, or just pick up a native version. But then again, boot camp is trivial to use aswell if you need to have it NOW.
Most definitely far ahead of linux. Hopefully one day the dev's will pull the head out of their ass with the 3d drivers :shadedshu

Thats why i'm hoping for OpenGL to be a hit. It'a allready supported by 3D cards just only if game companys support it more. There's allready a newer OpenGL this \next month due but it's still 2.x but hopfully 3.0 will set things right.

Voted for Windows, as it's the main one I use. OSX I've rarely seen, Linux is beyond my graphic card (at least the the dists I've tried..) and I like games.
Windows XP at least. I didn't like Vista that much. It felt like I was simply allowed to use my computer and not in charge of it. In that way Linux was nice to use.
windows xp for me, for the only reason i love games :)

i think windows is best, for home users/home computers. why? because it has the most support for programs, apps, games, etc. ms office is amazingly easy, and yes there is a version for osx, but i don't think it's quite as integrated into the whole os as office for ms is, could a mac user help me out here? linux is probably the most stable and best os for people running servers because of how stable linux is. as far as work in the workplace, as far as i've seen from my parents it's generally windows for the workstation, and linux for the servers and whenever they work on the servers they use linux, so you can't limit the workplace to just one os (ex. some mangers may not be able to use linux)

I never said macs were ahead of the PC. But before, they wouldn't get a game for two years like you exaggerated. Now its simply a few months behind. And soon, they'll simply be released at the same time.
But..........Powerbooks are G4's and have radeon 9700M's in them.. ;)
The macbook Pro has an x1600m and the new ones have an 8600m GT in them, on top of a Merom starting at 2.2ghz :)
The highest a MP has is an x1900XT though. Not bad, but not the greatest. As mac games grow, I see Ati/Nvidia releasing GPU's a good bit faster, too.
Although you could always get 4x 7300GT's
No, you won't have the zomgz 8800gtsxtx3000 latest edition, but its not a slouch.
Keep in mind though, the UI is 100% GPU independent. :) Unlike vista. OS X runs on a system without video drivers as show by the hackintosh... stuff ;) Which is quite a nice feature.
Hopefully KDE picks up some momentum with their new "Plasma..... (http://plasma.kde.org/)"... If linux can get a decent UI, I think linux momentum will get a HUGE shove in the right direction.
