i am trying to find a replacement for xp home with vista version of xp home, so if i were to ask you to pick one version of vista that represents what the new version of xp home would be, then what would your answer be?

Conti027

Considering the two versions that have 'Home in them, I'll agree.

Home Basic = no Aero
Home Premium = Aero

what i'm looking for is a general opinion from the members here as to what the vista equivelent of xp home is.

i'm not asking for a version of vista that only has the capabilities or is limited to what xp home can do today. instead i am trying to get an opinion as to which version of vista would best represent the OS "catagory" that xp home filled when it first came out.

does the xp pro catagory = vista basic, vista basic home, vista basic premium,
vista premium, or vista ultimate

does the xp home catagory = vista basic, vista basic home, vista basic premium,
vista premium, or vista ultimate

As nice as a try it would be to do this, you just cannot.

Home and pro differences are neglegible. Home could substitute in place of pro and vice versa.

Vista Ultimate, vs Vista Home basic are... well, quite different. :shadedshu

but if i get opinions on what others think the full featured home user version would be, then i can use their thoughts on the matter to help me make my own decission?

i read about the differefnt versions at microsoft but the different features dont help me to make my decission because i dont have a clue what features i will need or use in the future.

i'm an average home computer user who wants a full featured, but not over the top, operating system to use on a soon to be purchased computer with q6600 cpu and 4gb ram.

Full featured?

Well Basic is out of the question.

Bit locker, DVD burner, games are about all that seperate Ultimate from Business..

A single CPU is what you have...

so home premium or Business would fit better... if you don't want to pay for/need the Ultimate...

Business is REQUIRED to be used in virtual machine software..

But those are the only major differences I can think of at the moment.

HOME Premium, that is. Or Bussiness. I think Home Premium should do for the avarage user.
