Yes, take a paper clip and insert one end into the Green wire and the other end into any Black wire, this will allow it to run without being connected to your mobo :)

He might not have the funds to go out and buy a new one, I use a secondary psu to run my fans and water cooling!

Ive heard that this "jumping" (As you called it) of the second PSU isnt healthy for it. Is this true?
Also, how would it start up? Would you manually need to turn it on by flipping the switch at the back of the PSU or does it start up on its own somehow?

Jumping isnt a problem, you just need to make the connection between green and black!

Jumping can kill a computer psu, if done for too long. They are switching power supplies, and require a load on the +5V line as well.

I've yet to see any die from jumping, and I use it all the time

you may want one just on your mobo and vid card. then one on fans and drives and they dont really need much power compared to a mobo and video card

Regardless, it's still not good for them. You may never have an issue with it, ever, but they're still not designed to handle it.

I am not going to be using it like that anymore till i get water cooling to leak test it.

If you wanna spend some $ you can get the thermaltake drive bay PSU. Run your video card or cards off of it, cool little device.

I am working on getting the money for water cooling and a 8800GTS so i don't want to spend the money on a TT drive bay PSU i have checked them out before.
Fox34
07-10-2007, 09:31 PM
Its just that 8800 will suck so much power. What water cooling setup you thinking of getting?
p_o_s_pc
07-10-2007, 09:36 PM
It is going to be a custom water cooling the pump will be a MP355 and a dual 120mm RAD.
Fox34
07-10-2007, 09:37 PM
Have you seen the case mounted external radiators with the 3 120's? Thats sick cooling right there.
p_o_s_pc
07-10-2007, 09:40 PM
I have seen the 3 120mm rads but i don't want something like that dual will be fine.

You are, of course, entirely correct. Switching mode power supplies of the type used in computers are designed to have a load on them, and can either malfunction or improperly stress the unit when one is not present. Common practice is to hook up a hard drive and a fan or two to a molex when running one outside of a proper setup.

Just hook up an external switch to the second psu?

Or, you can make your own "Dummy Load";
