I may have asked this before, but this time I really need to know. I'm getting a new mobo, CPU, and RAM tomorrow. I am currently running what's in my profile and need to know if I am going to have to reinstall Windows for everything to work properly. I have already swapped mobo's on this Windows installation with no problems, but it was to the same chipset and the same single core CPU. Will not reinstalling cause any problems? Will it even work at all? Thanks in advance guys.

If it's a different chipset, you will be best off to re-install windows. I have tried this before, and it was between Intel chipsets, but different model #'s, there were many issues and problems. It will probably boot, mine did, but I also got a ton of error messages, cannot find hardware messages while getting found new hardware messages, it was a mess. I found it easier to re-install than fight it. Hope that helps! :toast:

It is a different chipset. Going from nForce4 SLI to nForce 590 SLI. I have a Windows XP Home disc, but it only has SP1 on it!!(yes I know you can dl SP2 but I would rather not). I thought so too, but was just asking anyway.

Sorry man, I already got a buyer, and I've already gotten some of his money for it lol...I'm selling the mobo, CPU, RAM, and vid card later. How much would you have given me for it?

Well download SP2, burn it to disc, and there ya go! That's how I used to do it when I had XP Pro. Then I got sick of doing that and obtained a version of XP Pro with SP2. Trust me dude, it's worth even installing XP + SP1 and downloading SP2 than the mess you'll try and fight if you don't! But once it's all said and done, you'll be good to go! And really compared to the time you'll spend tweaking and OC-ing that thing, installing XP isn't really that long of a task! :toast:

ehhh slipstreaming it with nlite is easy enough (hard part is the downloading, that takes a long time, but we have a cd with sp2 that we ordered from microsoft for free)

Download nLite and the sp2 redistributable, and use nLite to make a custom install CD with sp2 integrated. You can also integrate your chipset drivers.

I love nLite. It lets you strip out all the unneccessary Windows crap, and lets you enter all your information ahead of time, including the serial, so you don't have to type a thing during install.

nLite FTW...

But yes your best off reinstalling makes sure things are clean and working well...

But you don't really "HAVE" to... Right now i didn't re-install after my new main board swap... I probably should though to be honest..

Went from a Asus P5-800se to a P5LD2 and now to my P5B Deluxe... Since my last fresh install.... And went from my Intel D915 to my new Xeon 3060 :) :toast:

Good chance it won't even work if the mobo is not a HP. You might be able to choose weather or not to install the HP stuff, Depends on the CD.

I used it on a Compaq desktop, and the version of XP Pro came from a Gateway laptop.

all of the window disks i have gotten from dell were only windows, however they were modified a little because they did make the computer i installed it on a "dell" (i think it was in system manager or something). there was no crap ware on the os disk itself however. and yes this was not a dell system i installed it on.

yeah, its best to reinstall windows. I didnt do that with this current configuration, and while it was stable, OCing led to issues. I reinstalled windows and now everything is right as rain.

Get Nlite and slipstream SP2 into the disc and your good to go.

pbmaster, no need to re-install windows. First thing obvious backup all important things from ur drive. Second un-install all Nvidia drivers. Shutdown PC. Pull out old CPU, mobo and RAM. Put in your new set. Plug in ur hdd. Start ur machine. Windows will boot with missing drivers. Pop-in the driver CD that comes with ur Asus board. Install. DONE.

If you have the same chipset no problems, especially with nividia. I have done this many times. No problems.

Better if you have a spare drive u can do the following. Run a Windows ASR backup and create a recovery disk with old hardware. Plug in ur new hardware and spare drive (should be of same size as old one tho). Run the Windows installation and select recovery option and proceed from there with the recovery disk u created. You can search my earlier thread in doing this step by step for somebody who asked a similar question.

Suraswami, this would help immensely if it can be done. I just install ALL nVidia drivers correct?

But hey I tried it worked. Better you backup the whole thing and try this one. If it works well and good, saved lot of time. If it doesn't blow the OS on the drive and re-install everything.
