View Full Version : ATITool 0.24 in non-admin user
I have installed ATITool 0.24 as Administrator in WinXP Pro. But as Power User, I cannot start ATITool correctly, it says in pop-up dialog that "Permission was denied when trying to access the Kernel Mode Driver". How can I use this tool without administrator permissions?

If you right click atitool.exe you'll see an option "Run as..."
From there, you can run the program as the Administrator or a user with high privileges. This may help you.
Thank you, it works.
But it won't help me, if I want to start ATITool automatically when starting Windows (when logging user in, actually).

open a command line and check out
runas /?
Hmm, strange thing. I uninstalled v0.24 and installed v0.23, which works fine. After I read your advices, I installed v0.24 again and "Voila!", it starts in PowerUsers (non-admin) without errors/complains.
Thank you for your suggestions and sorry for the post.

The Windows' "Run As" functionalities are just workarounds and no solutions.
I assume that IMA has still the 0.0.23 service running, but is using the 0.24 main program, and that's why it works for him now.
0.0.23 works very well with limited users if the user has full access to HKLM\SOFTWARE\ATITool
0.24 always claims the following "Video card change detected: Startup profile not loaded", although no card has changed and it works 100% with an admin user.
Also it sets - or hopefully just displays - the clock/mem settings as 23.35 and 1.00 MHz.
I checked the ATITool log and looked for denied accesses via RegMon.
By the way may card is a Radeon 9700 Pro with Catalyst 5.6, but this wasn't a problem with 0.0.23 at all.
Here are the results:

Nothing spectacular.
It seems something has changed radically from 0.0.23 to 0.24 that prevents usage with a limited user.
To W1zzard: If necessary you can have access to my system via TightVNC. Parallel Audio conference via Skype and TeamSpeak is possible too.
Kind regards and thanks for reading

maddes did you try uninstall atitool, reboot, install 0.24 ? i assume you did, but just to make sure.
when run as normal user atitool 0.24 should not be able to access the 0.24 driver (i can if you still have the 0.0.23 driver running)
i'll consider adding a config switch to allow access to normal users

Yes, I installed 0.24 on a clean system (I use three partitions for Games, Applications plus Tests and an imaging program). Also tried to install 0.24 over 0.0.23, rebooted and got the same problem.
Do you know the code that has changed and causes this problem?
Maybe ATITool should be configurable only with an Admin account (Speeds, Profiles, etc.). With a limited user you can just switch between defined profiles and do the testing of those profiles.
This way a father (admin) can overclock his gfx card, create profiles for stable performance and can give ATITool at his son's hand without any worries, as the son can only use tested profiles. (In some cases father and son change place :)
