anyone know what would be a safe temp for a hard drive? I've had mine hit 55, and I'm not convinced that it's safe

With a small fan during a hdd read mine runs at around 46C. Before that, it was close to your temps.

55C is on the edge of safe. I would say under 50 is good for hdds.

according to speed fan, hover at 48-52. it says okay at 49 then danger at 50>.> the worst part is that it has a 120 mm fan all to itself, and the fan is the noisiest {spelling?} thing in my case, so it's not underpowered

Check SMART readings from speedfan. Also who makes it and how old is it?

Is it a Refurbished or Recertified one? I have a refurbished one (80G) which works at 55C to 57C under load during summer with a 120 mm fan blowing on it for almost 2 years. Never had a problem. I am not using that as a main system disk. That one is for other storages. Sometimes used for Video capture. I think the sensor on the HDD is broken. But I didn't want to take risk.
160G refurbished - 40C to 42C load
40G refurbished - 45 to 48C load
New 200G - runs never goes over 40C under load.
All are from WD.

smart tells me that everything is at 100%, but my hd is never supposed to go beyond 48 degrees. all I know is that smart tells me its the WDC WD1600JS-60MHB5, and i'm too lazy to tear it out to check. now that orthos is running, the only thing that I recall seeing below perfect is now unknown attribute 190, and it is at critical condition. as far as i know, i'm the first person to use this drive. could another fan help? perhaps moving the hd? the really weird thing is that temps only go up during orthos and never go down again. I don't think that I use too much of the drive while orthos is on
