Very serious problem! Fan control shuts fan off completely. Fan control didn't work correctly on 24 either - checked override fan control and fixed 100%, but fan stayed at default percentage on reboot. Opening ATITool and clicking apply would bring fan to 100% (showed 100% and actually was at 100%), where it should have been. Now, with 25b1, setting override fan control and fixed 100%, fan "reads" 0% on reboot but is actually at 100%. If I click apply, it will "read" 100% and fan will stop completely. People will end up with dead cards if this isn't fixed.
BTW, this is on Win XP Pro x64 with a BBA Radeon X800 Pro. Fan controls worked normally with 24 in Win XP 32bit before moving to 64bit. Checking "Do not change PWM" doesn't affect results with either version. ATI Hotkey Poller service (which I normally have disabled) running or not doesn't affect results. Some other odd results with both versions. Sometimes, temp display will drop to 0 with ATITool open, especially right after changing fan speed, but this is very inconsistent. Also, Catalyst version reads "pre 2.4" (with both 24 and 25b1, but only in 64bit). 25b1 is also not showing anything in the "Use device:" box.
I've had great results using ATITool for some time now, but please fix the fan control issue before someone kills their card due to the fan turning off.

kris: try uninstalling atitool, reboot and the reinstall atitool
i tried on a 64-bit windows xp and everything is working fine here
KrisMCool
06-18-2005, 12:09 AM
Yes, this is a problem on 64bit only for me. 32bit Windows never gave me these issues with 24. Also I'm using a more recent BIOS with default fan speed set at 67% instead of 43% (101-107, 7-19-04). I'll try reinstalling. So you know, I've made a habit of uninstalling the "device" ATITool in Device Manager after uninstalling the program and rebooting before installing a new version. I do this because uninstalling the program doesn't remove the "device" (never has for me since it became a "device" in Dev Mngr). You may need to use the command prompt hidden device trick to see that it still exists (I do).
Wizzard, do you leave the hotkey poller service on Auto? Only seems to be absolutely necessary for Overdrive. I disable as many services as I can, even for everyday use, so I'd like to know how you feel about this one. Also, what about the Catalyst version showing pre 2.4 (with both 5.5 & 5.6 64bit)? Any idea about why the "Use device:" drop-down box is blank, even though the card specs are listed correctly below it?
KrisMCool
06-18-2005, 12:49 AM
OK, uninstalled ATITool and rebooted. Didn't uninstall ATITool from Dev mgr this time (not hidden, BTW, still shows as an installed "device" after program uninstallation). Set hotkey poller to Auto (default). Installed ATITool. Exact same results as previously posted. During installation a Security Alert popped up mentioning something about how this driver program had no "Authenticode", and asked if I wanted to continue or cancel installation (happened during first install of 25b1 also). I copied the installation text output if you need it.

Actually, I haven't had time to test this in 0.25b1 yet, but in 0.24 the dynamic fan control based on GPU temp didn't work for me (x800 Pro, MSI K8T Neo-FIS2R, latest patches of XP Pro). I had it set to switch from 0% to 100% when above 50 C. Fan showed still 0% and temp continued to show increase. A 0 to 100 % switch is audible for me, so I believe it wasn't just reported wrong in ATITool. I have good cooling passively with the Arctic Silencer so no harm done, but I guess it could have been a problem. For now I have it at 100% round the clock, which keeps it at 39 rather than 48 when doing simple websurfing etc.

im wondering if is possible to add the % of the fan in the main window to know ho fast is the fan running and not have to go to the settings tab fan control..
like the temp setting on the main window GPU|AMBIENT|FAN %
EDIT: another suggestion..
in the tray icon to show the fan % in the same icon like the gpu/ambient changing on a loop with differents colors you choosse wich color do you like on gpu/ambient and fan %

Actually, I haven't had time to test this in 0.25b1 yet, but in 0.24 the dynamic fan control based on GPU temp didn't work for meOk, so I finally got around to test it in 0.25b1 and it's been working fine so far. I get a little worried with the other reports of Fan Control failure, however, so a way of checking Fan % quickly would be highly welcome :) I think I would prefer both (GPU) temp and Fan % to be displayed simultaneously though, not having to wait for it to cycle before it shows.

@WizZard - from your system monitoring utility thread
BTW, way to show GPU/Core-clocks from ATITool in MBM5 would be nice.
This would be Outstanding. The ability to send the temperatures to a specific MBM sensor is awesome. I would think this is relatively easy to do as you have the feature. Could it read card fanspeed as well? We've done a lot of work on DFI NF2/NF3/NF4 using ATITool/MBM5. Great combination. The Nvidia guys are dying for for an NVTool. http://www.dfi-street.com/forum/showthread.php?t=6798&page=1&pp=15

I have some isues:
1. My brand new ASUS x800XL AGP crashes as soon as my GPU-clock goes above 35Mhz, there are no heat issue involved.
2. Can you ad fin min v-core and ram speed?
My 9800SE@Pro (R.I.P.) was sett to run @ 200/200 in win and 407/353 in 3D with no problem.
3. Can you ad volt tweaking? Maybe some kind of auto clocking with/without increasing volt?
4. Is there a conflict with ASUS smart doctor?
5. Can you ad fan controlling do the other parts of the computer with a goal temperature on different parts? There could be some sort of auto system on this as well, well the CPU-temp is depending on the CPU-fan but also on the intake fan and so on
I have a gigabyte, just so you know what to start with :D

Actually, they're not. The temp in the CCC keeps switching between 'GPU core' and 'GPU environmen' temp, i.e. the ones shown as 45 | 40 in ATITool. The 40 in CCC is the same as the 40 in ATITool, so no difference really.

Ok, I fund a "bug", now that we can controll the fan speed, then why cant we store the fan settings to the profile? (games= 100%, low speed settings keep max 55*C)
An other thing is that the max mem temp cant be checked, what if the GPU is ok but not the memtemp?
(considering uppgrading the card with zalmans flower fan that also cools the mem).
ATitool crached the computer when seeking the max core, 429Mhz with no artifacts before the crach.
Should fastwright be on or off?

You know, I've found my max core the old fashioned way, manually with hard work via trial and error, "find max core" crashes my otherwise rock-solid rig too and has done so for as long as I can remember and wish it would be fixed; However "find max mem" though runs just fine as it has always...
as for Fast Writes On/Off, IIRC it's a moot point as it is only applicable to AGP,

Actually Sucka (from OCF?), while neither worked perfectly concerning fan control, only 25b1 kills my fan completely while reporting 100% after clicking"Apply" on reboot. With 24, fan speed goes to default (43 or 67%, depending on BIOS) on reboot regardless of how my settings are saved, but clicking "Apply" sets it properly. Win x64 BTW. I'm running v 24, and my vid fan off a controller, until this gets fixed. I, and others, reported fan control problems some time ago (shortly after 25b1 was released) but no changes have been made that I know of.

Hey Wizard... Having the same issue in XP x64 as Kris with the fan speed control.
VisionTek - Xtacy X850XT PCI-e
MSI K8N-SLI Platinum
AMD64 4000+
Windows XP Pro (32bit) & Windows XP Pro x64 (Dual boot)
ATI Catalyst 5.7 w/ CCC (both 32bit and 64bit versions)
24 works fine on Windows XP (32 bit) but initially with the fan it did not. It would load the speed at startup correctly, but it would have this high pitched squeel (@ 40%-85% fan speeds). Had to have the CCC panel open and the Overdrive screen showing while making adjustments to the fan control in WinXP 32bit - then reboot with them both still active and them it would start back up at the correct speed and no squeeling (my speed I always load is 40%).
So in .24 w/ WinXP 32bit I got it to work; however, the same is not true in WinXP 64bit. Tried the same work around on 64bit and even though the fan control was set to 40% I would reboot and it would be running @ 100% (full-bore) and the fan setting would say it was set to 100%. Any changes in this area and the system would go back down to 40% but with that insanity producing squeel.
I think based on Kris's posts, I'll wait on installing the new 25 beta - and just uninstall the .24 on 64bit Windows.
That said, anyone know how to upgrade/change my default fan speed (19%) by either upgrading the BIOS or editing it?

I've been enjoying the use of this great little app... although everytime I start the computer I have to:
1, go into the fan settings and click "apply" to make the fan spin down to the fixed speed
2, click on the 'Temperature Monitoring" tab so that it begins displaying temperatures
The following does not work:
1, correct scaling of actual 100% speed of fan.. currently around 40% in atitool means actually 100% of the fan speed.. my best guess is that running atitool at 15% is like 35 % or 40% of actual fan speed. Atitool reports my 15% of atitools fan speed as 0% - the fan is definately spinning.
2, Neither "try to keep GPU temperature at ..." nor "Dynamic based on GPU temperature" works with any settings..
My two cents worth:
I love the configurability and small footprint of SpeedFan (www.almico.com) and would love it if I could control my ASUS fan speed with this fantastic little application!
I have an ASUS A9600XT (Device ID: 4152, Chip RV360)

Running on an AMD 3500+ (pre venice core) with Windows XP Pro x64 Edition.
Yep... same here, but at least this version the fan actually works. .24 official did not in XP Pro x64.

Hip hip to that!
M$ has not been very active encouraging software vendors to code/compile for x64 have they!

I've tried this beta with my Asus EAX800XL and the manual fan control works, same with the "try to keep the gpu temperature at" but the feature I'm interested in does not :( (Dynamic based on temperature).
I get 100% fan speed no matter what.

I wrote to alfredo@almico.com (author of SpeedFan) asking him to add full temperature and fan speed monitoring/control into his application.. Anyone interested in this could help by writing him and petitioning him.
SpeedFan already has the ability to interface with ASUS SmartDoctor to monitor these values. It seems like the next logical step to add the common sensor chips that ASUS use to the extensive list of sensor chips SpeedFan already supports.

the .24 did wonders for my 1 month old ATI Radeon X850XTPE! But it's fan was so loud and at a high pitch my dog wont go near my computer anymore. But These Are Some good clock i got. The back ground clocks are someone else's i was looking at. And also the FPS amount isn't the actual amount si it? i using an old machine with it a P4 2.53Ghz 533MHz FSB 512kb Cache. My new Computer is going to be an HP xw4300 3.8Ghz P4 2mb Cache 800MHz FSB (OCing to 1040Mhz FSB) with a PCI-E X16 Visiontek Xtasy ATI Radeon X850XTPE.

but my new computer comes with Win XP x64 Pro so i need to find out all the errors with ATI Tool and figure how to fix em. If not i guess i'll have to use ATI's OverDrive System.

why does it say it doing around 200-231.9 fps? that's impossible! well at least on todays video cards. But also how long after the X900XTPE is released how long until ATI Tool will have a version supporting it. I hope it has 32 Pipelines like i been hearing. all together the card will have 2X the RAM, faster Core (rumored at 600Mhz and maybe higher), Faster Ram (rumored to be 700Mhz 1.4ghz total), I can't wait to see the benchmarks i can get with that in my new computer with it's Intel Pentium 4 670 3.8ghz 1GB DDR2 667 ECC RAM (2X512MB Sticks (i'm going to add another 1 GB later), 1X 160GB SATA II Main HD, 2X 250GB SATA II Secondary (Slave) HD's, Intel 955XE Mobo, and lets see what benchmarks it can get non-OC'ed and OC'ed with the X850XTPE and compare it to that X900XTPE. Plus have you heard of Creative Labs X-Fi soundcard? it has Better quality sound than the Audigy 4 and the Fatal1ty and Elite Pro Version's have 64MB of Dedicated X-RAM just for the Sound! Maybe it will boost game performance perhaps, *does pinky thing like Dr. Evil from Austin Powers* but sparing 229.99 and 299.99 Retail for a soundcard i know i can spare it (thank you ingram micro for you letting me order them 1 month ahead of time at wholesale prices!) Before you know it a X-Fi Tool will be out to tweak that lol. I already spend 408.94 on a Visiontek Xtasy ATI Radeon X850XTPE PCI-EX16 New (Retail around $599.99). also the System tool can it tweak intel made boards?

So if you got .24 should you keep it or upgrade to .25?!?!!?!

Sorry if this sounds obvious, but...
if you want stability: use 0.24
if you want the latest testing version (beta): use 0.25betax (x stands for any version of beta, ie beta1, beta2, or even release candidates (mature beta) like rc1, rc2)

why does it say it doing around 200-231.9 fps? that's impossible! well at least on todays video cards.
It's very possible and very realistic. For example, I have a Biostar nVidia-based nForce3 250 motherboard with an AthlonXP 3200+, 1GB corsair DDR400 2-2-2-5 2T RAM, and a Radeon 9800 PRO AGP 128MB card that gets 183fps on ATITool's 3D view when moderately overclocked. Video cards are capable of rendering far more FPS than can be displayed on a given monitor. Also, the ATITool 3D demo is a very simple (if you will) rendering that's in a small window which makes high FPS possible especially on that Radeon 850 of yours. If you were to enable in your ATi Direct3D menu under "Enable Vertical Sync" to "Always On" the FPS would have a hard limit equal to or less than your monitor's refresh rate (i.e. 60 FPS, 70, 72, 75, 80.. etc) and when you run the "Show 3D View" on ATITool it would reflect this very plainly.
Hopefully that helps explain it a lil bit. :)
