View Full Version : Arnold Schwarzenegger to Appeal Court Decision to Ban a Video Game Ban

Arnold Schwarzenegger, the governor of California, is a pioneer in video game legislature. He recently proposed a bill to ban the selling of M rated games (games meant for people 17 or older, based on the ESRB rating system) to minors (anyone under the age of 18). However, a court recently ruled that such a ban would inhibit free speech, and would hence be unconstitutional. Schwarzenegger vowed to appeal this decision. I signed this important measure to ensure that parents are involved in determining which video games are appropriate for their children," he said in a statement. "Many of these games are made for adults, and choosing games that are appropriate for kids should be a decision made by their parents.

This is actually good. Then we can blame the parents for kids gong berserk instead of a video game.

yea...most stores already ask you if you are 17 anyhow. Last time I bought an M-rated game i had to show them my drivers liscense to prove i was 17.

You should have to be 17 to buy an M rated game... Honestly..
I mean you have to be 17 to see a rated R movie...

Whats the difference... Yes blaming the parents over the game designers would be nice too. The last thing I want to see if a larger law banning violent games actually get passed downline.

No, that's not true. But I'm glad you said that, so that we can learn from it.

There is a big difference between a game rated "M" and a movie rated "M".
The "M" rating for a movie allows those under the age of 17 to watch, and remains in an advisory position.
The "M" rating for a video game (at this point) ONLY allows those who are 17 or older to play.
Thus, the "M" rating for video games is exactly the same as the "NC-17" rating given to mainstream movies with sexual content.

And now I hope you understand why these new ratings are wrong.

17 to PLAY!?!?!? Okay, I don't think that should be the law... Parents should have some say in there, besides taking out that law would honestly probably be better. It's pointless what are the police going to do walk into my house and bust my little sister playing GTA?!?! Seriously?

Am I going to walk into your house and see your 16 year old playing GTA and call the cops? And are they REALLY going to care... Probably not, sounds more like one of them things where they want to "Act" like they are doing something worthwhile and in the real world its just short of meaningless.

lol... don't blame the developers. Don't blame the parents. Blame the dumbass child. I was playing DooM when I was TWO YEARS OLD, and I was constantly playing viloent games like Resident Evil, Fighting Force, Metal Gear, etc... but I did not kill a single person thinking he or she would respawn somewhere else.

I would say 90% of the time its because the parents are slack assed retards.

Learn to discipline a child, and he'll turn out perfectly fine. Most parents will never grasp this simply amazing "concept".

But quite a surprise from someone being the star of a handful of videogames himself.

Ya but you ended up here, and consumed by computers and games. Just think you coulda been an astronaut or something!

And to whoever said the ratings are wrong...um isn't A(O) the equivilant to NC -17?
So an M game cannot be bought by a child, just like an M movie cannot be bought by child correct?

There's a difference between a film watched in a movie theater and a movie or game played at home.

MOSY PARENTS…???? 90%, slack ass retards, discipline a child and he’ll turn out fine?????

I don’t get your flame….I have been in the military, have 7 kids my son is in the military now and we played games of all types but I wasn’t a 90% moron, slack assed retard for playing games rated mature with my son when he was younger. He turned out awesome and is in Special Ops in real time (as I) and fraggin the real bad asses.

Maybe SOME parents could fall into that statement but it is to much a general statement to state MOST parents. If you allow the gaming console or pc to baby sit your kid as he/she grows up without interaction with them, well I could understand. but those are not MOST parents.

My 10 year old has been PC gaming since 6. She is doing the Nancy Drew platform now, my wife plays with her and helps most of the time but not all the time but we also check in during her gaming. MOST parents do care.

Where did you get those stats????

Isnt there something like this out already? If parents care about what their kids watch and play, they should be informed by the ratings I would think.

Most parents with annoying children.

Go to walmart.

Pick a loud child. You won't have to look far.

Look how the parent deals with it.

Point in case.

do it right.. like you perhaps.. and they turn out fine ;D

This all seems a little hypocritical coming from one of the biggest action hero movie stars ever. The one who made sooooo many violent movies about shooting and blowing up thousands of people.....

What a cock!!!

Its like seeing the taliban promoting peace or mike tyson saying boxing is bad...

What a load of crap...

I think dippy was talking about the cases of bad kids not all kids. And to tell you the truth I agree with him 100%. A "majority" of the time it is the parents fault. Some times it can be genetic or mental etc.

Parenting these days is getting worse, I see 6 yr old kids at the shops chuck a tantrem and swear at their mother... it makes me want to go over there and give the kid a smack on the ass.

I don't blame video games or movies etc.. a kid, if bought up correctly, will know what is right and wrong, will know respect and will know that games are just games and movies are just movies...

That is my opinion

has anyone thought about the genetic amplification effect? simply, if there is poison in an enviroment,it will be more apparent twenty generations later, even if most of the origional poison is gone. now, look at it this way: most people grew up well because theirparents were kind, but very hard-assed when needed. now, people bring up their kids and say that they refuse to hit them, or hit them for no reason. so, there is either the effect where people grow up liking the kinder side of their parents, and pass this on through the generations untill there is no discipline, or parents constantly beat the **** out of their kids untill the kid only understands violence. beyond that, movies/ games can only educate people on how to use weapons, or give them ideas as to how to be cruel. I used to play alot of shooters, like socom and cs, and I will tell you that the forces will train you things that these games can describe. most gamers can tell you where the safety is, they can tell you how to change firing rates, they can tell you where the magazine eject is, they can tell you how to maximize accuracy with a given weapon, and can even tell you about some of the basic tactics used by the forces. they will also tell you how to kill a person with a pool stick {hitman}, how to dis-embowel someone with a knife while running {stargate had something like this, and I'm certain hannibal the cannibal did}.

games and movies are just education for things these people already want to do. the most simple example, requiring no thought, is that people get the idea that "oh, I could do this for a living!", and then join the forces. I know six guys who joined because they played alot of games. I have only ever asked eight people why they joined.

Understood and I agree with your assessment. Its all in the big picture of taking a deep interest in the way you bring up your kids. But I would be careful of generalizations.

To DrunkenMafia and Dippyskoodlez, I am grateful that you two are conscious to the 21st century dilemma. Thanks for taking the time to listen and respond. It is much appreciated. Thank you to the both of you for your straightforwardness and opinions. I have read much of what you guys have responded throughout the forums, and you two have reaffirmed my reasons for joining the TPU forum. :toast:
