Is this just a desperate grab by Intel to compete in the 64-bit processor market until they can release a 64-bit processor that is suitable for everyday applications? Something more akin to HT vs Actual Dual processors. Because I definetly get the feeling this is not a TRUE 64-bit processor.

Well... either P4 EM64T or AMD 64 are the true 64-bit processor anyway. If you want the true 64 bit, they aren't for u.

true 64bit = IA64

Okay, why not? Maybe they're not built strictly for 64-bit applications and OS's but how are they not technically 64-bit? What's the difference?

I believe alphas and sparcs are truly 64 bit too, though im not sure about that. The only one I'm 100% sure about is IA64 as w1zzard stated, it's built up from scratch as 64bit CPU, has no legacy bullshit, it can however emulate x86-32.

yes, that is the real 64 architecture...
EM64T is a 64 bits extension added to the x86 architecture....

So then. Which is the better processor? An AMD 64-FX with slower clock speeds or and Intel P4 with higher clock speeds and EM64T?

Depends on what you do, the 64bit isn't an argument to buy either though. Google for comparisons between the 2, you'll see that both win a lot of benchmarks, pick a CPU based on what you use it for.
I'd pick Intel because AMD sucks

speeds? model ect. need more info...
in all actuality amd and intels 64 bit tech are almost identical but nither is true 64 bit the only true 64 it procs that u realy hear of are the itaniums (there are others though but theyarnt wirth mentioning ;))

if you are using windows - i see no need to go 64bit till at least 2006. the benefits for 32-bit apps are non-existant, for 64bit apps .. are there any? (yeah yeah farcry)
this page you are reading is served by 64-bit enabled xeons under linux.. if you want to run linux try to get a 64-bit cpu :)

Farcray isn't 64bit :) It's just modified to run on 64bit.
