So I bit the bullet and ordered the 8600gts. I think it was worth it because I only have so much money and I only play games @ 1024x768 (my monitor sucks :() Even if I did buy a new monitor, I would probably cheap out and get one that only goes to 1280x1024.
I'm pretty sure my system would bottleneck an 8800 anyway. Just making sure it was a good move.

Aww... Should have gotten a 2600xt GDDR4 version under 7.8 drivers they FLY!!!!
*FYI- they are keeping up with and beating 1950pro's finally*

But ohh well not a bad card especially for low res use.

Awesome, I think you are gonna love it. It has renewed my faith in Nvidia.

Yeah, it's not such a bad move. I'm picking up an 8600GTS myself within the next week - factory overclocked (700/2100) and only $140 after MIR.

I've been making a 6600GT work for nearly two years now - I'm ready for anything new :)

Meh. I dont like the 2600XT or 8600 of any flavour, if DX10 doesnt bother you there are many other cards you could of got for the same money that would of made that 86GTS their whipping boy, but as longs your happy then all is good :p

I don't know about the 8600....

But I do know that the 2600xt gddr is cheaper than a 1950pro and performs better now in Dx9 :) So I don't see whats not to like there... Ohh ya it also runs cooler and uses less power :)

Now if you compare to a 1950xt or xtx, or a 8800 well then....

7.8 drivers brought a lot to the 2600's I don't know about the 2400's but who cares about them.

Your going from an X700 to a 8600GTS.... :)

I think that card will run perfect in your system man. It will be a huge upgrade as well. Niko does have a good point about the 2600XT but the 8600 will still keep you more than happy I think...

enjoy.

the ddr4's and in general are still 17quid more expensive than the x1950pro the ddr3's cost around the same plus the 7.8 drivers do the x1950's a large boost in css i found out

You can get them in the US cheaper than a 1950pro :)
By about $5-10

The 7.8 drivers fixed a lot of "issues" for the x1k cards in CSS, but didn't give much of a performance increase, I gained a tiny average of 60 points in 3dmark06 and seemingly 2-3 fps in CSS. So they did seem to bring something that wasn't there before, maybe a bit of driver efficiency fixes I don't know.

But 8600GTS is not a bad card by all means, and very well may get better with drivers to help it stay within the 2600xt gddr4's range.
Good midline cards that don't consume any power is the way I look at it.

All I can say is, I was about to do exactly what Nemesis881 is about to do until I noticed how well the HDs were now doing with the new Cat 7.8s as well as current prices here in the US making the HD2600XT GDDR4 a much better buy versus the 8600GTS!

These days, the performance shot in the arm ATI gave the HD series and the price drops means that these cards can go toe to toe with most any 8600GTS, and for less money!

Oh well, his loss I suppose...

Some of you might be forgetting that he is upgrading from an X700 Pro...he is going to be blown away no matter what he gets lol

In aussie the ddr3 version of the 2600xt is only about $130 where as the DDR4 version is like $220!!!!

The 8600GTS is also around the $240 mark....

I would get the DDR3 XT if i was buying a card in aussie considering you can almost buy 2 of em for the price of 1 of the other cards....

But like I said before, an X700 to a 8600gts.... he is gonna be over the moon with the boost ..... :)

That's what I'm saying lol...yes there are better cards, but he doesn't even have a job, so this is big for him. He's been waiting for a new PSU before stepping up to a better vid card and now he finally can because of the Ultra he won here!!

Sorry if I'm stealing the thread, but could someone point me to a site where it indicates the 2600xt beats the 1950pro on the new 7.8 drivers? Love to see it so I can choose to either go with the 2600xt or 1950pro (I understand there should be a 2600xt AGP version coming out soon). I've also heard a lot of problems with the 1950pro with the 7.8 drivers as well.

Anyways, an 8600GTS is a big upgrade from a x700 no doubt. So congrats :)

ALL over the place...
Look up reviews under 2600xt 7.8 drivers...
Or check hwbot.org for app benchmarks

Either one is a good buy, 2600xt gddr4 slightly beating the 8600gts currently, although I do not know how an AGP card would reflect..... Honestly if you still have agp I would just consider getting pci-e and getting a mainboard and ddr2 if you don't have it all at once, be a HUGE step at that point.

1950pro in AGP has issues with 7.8 drivers :)
1950pro in pci-e got a small boost

What's kinda interesting is the 1950pro AGP and PCI-e price difference is barely anything ($10, maybe $20? not enough to justify getting a new mobo). All I'm gonna do is buy a quick cheap video card and amd dual core upgrade, then save up for the good stuff coming out next year, by that time I'll have enough money and get a real good gaming rig. Besides, when I wanna do an overhaul of my system, I'm gonna have to buy new ram, new cpu, new video card, and new mobo. When I do that, I wanna save up for (almost) top of the line parts (none of the parts that are priced like the GF ultra, or hell, the GTX, or intel extreme lineup). Probably high mid-range stuff similar to the e6550, GF8800GTS 320MB, EVGA NF68 mobo, and G.Skill 2 x 1GB memory).

In that case ya a 1950pro, or a 2600xt *if* they release it agp and *if* it runs well in agp...

I'm loving the feedback guys! I see people mentioning the 2600xt's and I was seriously considering getting one, but all the benchmarks I've seen the 8600gts is better :(. (I'm still an ATI fanboy at heart :p)

New benchmarks they run about dead even with each other.
Either way like said before nice upgrade, both decent cards, and not bad pricing either you will be happy :)
