Today Valve started the HL2 preloading. Everybody who owns a Steam Account can start downloading the encrypted content right now... or you can start waiting:

Well, it's supposedly gonna be out early next month, so I guess so.

as far as i can tell the preload transfers graphics, videos and sounds to your system which are finalized .. the executable and other stuff will be transferred at a later time
