I currently have Windows XP Pro and I have ordered Vista Home Premium, what I want to know is: Will I be able to use the upgrade install option? Or will I have to do a fresh install of Vista? I know that I'd have to do a fresh one if i was upgrading to Home Basic, but what about Premium??
I can backup my data as I have 5 DVDs but I'd rather not!

You will have an upgrade option....

even though you'll have the upgrade option i'd advise doing a complete fresh install, avoids a lot of possible problems that way

dont upgrade!

it leaves a bunch of crap from xp there and you always heve "issues" with stuff not working rite.

use the format and fresh install to load it.

Avoiding an "upgrade" is always the best option with windows. A fresh install will be cleaner and more stable.

Ummm, I don't think the upgrade of Vista uses any parts of XP. It puts all the old stuff into a separate folder, iirc.

no matter how he installs it, he'll be downgrading. vista no likey ati +agp. i found this out the hard way. after two weeks of fiddling with the damn thing on my friend's system and trying 20+ different drivers and patches and "fixes" we ended up installing xp and moving on...
good luck mate.

You are corrent Wile E.

The upgrade process for Vista is a LOT cleaner than previous Windows versions. However a fresh format is still recommended by everyone :)

Its got a 128mb 9800 PRO. Not even SM3.0 (going to use onboard soon TBH, while I wait for an AGP 2600 to be released in Australia)

well, from what i came across, the 9 series and previous are not affected. only x8 series and newer. my buddy's 1650 falls in there, and let me tell you, i wanted to smack the vista devs in the face with a bfh!

It better not fry my AGP card or there'll be trouble! In fact so much trouble that they'll find a claim on their insurance for not just and AGP card but a new cpu, mb, pci-e card, screen, hd etc. As I will "not know" what part of my computer has blown and I'll be requiring a new one from microsoft!

lol, it won't blow anything, but expect one of two things:
a bsod for ATIKMDAG.SYS

-or-

the driver refusing to load upon boot.

LOL
I wonder...
ATI have different drivers for XP and Vista so if I uninstall the driver then install vista then install vista driver, I'll bet it'll work! That will mean it has no driver for the install but it can run without a driver as it has done b4.

Partitions ftw. You can just port your shit over from your previous install.

Yay! Windows Vista WORKS with my ATi Radeon x1600 PRO AGP graphics card! The latest version of Vista seems to be alright with it as long as you update during install (I think!) I'm now trying to get my wireless USB stick to work too but it isn't compatible. (USR5422)

You can use the upgrade option with Vista HP if you are (acording to the back of the Vista box) upgrading from XP Home SP2, MCE or Vista Basic. I know for a fact that you can not upgrade XP Pro with Vista HP. I tried, no go. Just as good though. A fresh install is always the best.
