Hi guys,
Can a network switch create/link the computers in my house together as a home network. If it can not, can a network hub do that?

Thank you.

yes it can...

Most corporates use switch to create their internal networks.

ok, so on the other hand, the network hub cannot, correct?

A hub can as well. Although, you may have trouble sharing your internet connection without a router.

Ah I see. So with a wireless router connect to the Broadband modem, where does the network switch connect to?

You can connect a switch or hub to any port on the router except it's WAN port. Usually most homes don't need that many ports and can get by with the 5 ports on the router.

oh ok, so with the wired/wireless router, I really don't need a hub/switch.

oh ok, so with the wired/wireless router, I really don't need no hub/switch.

that is correct, for a router is basically a smart switch.

Here is a decent explanation of the difference between hubs and switches if you're interested.

Yes, that'd help very much. :toast:

The thing is when you use a switch or hub, you will need a router or gateway behind it. A router or gateway provides a DHCP so the switch/hub can obtain IP addresses. If you dont have this, then you have to add static ip's to each client individually.

Ok, I'll keep that in mind. Thank you.

see, routers today, are mini switches/ hubs. the term router has been corrupted by todays market, because a router should not be a switch or hub, it should be a router.. to route traffic to a different network via hub or switch. but to answer you questions.. the router is all you need, unless you are running more than 4 or 5 pc's..
