I want to upgrade from my crt to an lcd. Im looking for a 19" regular not widescreen black monitor possibly with both D-sub and DVI. Im not a gamer so I dont need anything with real high specs, but I do photo edit and design web sites. Trying to stay at 200.00US or under.
Can you all give me some good options?

with no difference in price between the 19" and the 20" and the 21" and the 22" monitors are just a few dollars more so to be honest the differences between a 19" and a 22" are small so i would look at.
for a 19" i like this one:
Hanns·G JW-199DPB Black 19" 5ms DVI Widescreen LCD Monitor 300 cd/m2 700:1 Built in Speakers - Retail $159
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824254009
for a 22" i like this one it fits your budget and is a great deal with the rebate:
Hanns·G HG-216DPO Silver/Black 22"(21.6" viewable area) 5ms Widescreen HDMI LCD Monitor 300 cd/m2 1000:1 Built in Speakers - Retail $239 with $40 mail in rebate = $199

I would rather go with a trusted brand.

hey, thanks. just not sure that I want a wide screen right now, I dont know why. but those are good choices and i've noticed that there are more choices in widescreen than regular, and for the same price or sometimes less. How about this one?

are there any down sides to using a widescreen? I've never used a widescreen so what I mean is, lets say im on this site, am I going to have the same view I have now or because on a widescreen the height is more narrow will I have to scroll more to see everything?
Hope that isnt a dumb question.

well hanns g is an exelent brand, very good quality and for $20 more you get an extra 3"of screen getting the 22" model but you do have to wait on that $40 mail in rebate so either hanns g you pick you will get a solid top quality and reliable monitor, if it were me i would go for the 22" for $199
Hanns·G HG-216DPO Silver/Black 22"(21.6" viewable area) 5ms Widescreen HDMI LCD Monitor 300 cd/m2 1000:1 Built in Speakers - Retail $239 with $40 mail in rebate = $199

Bottom left to top right. With LCD's you actualy get 20" but with CRT there's about 1/2 inch behind the plastic front and some times more.

it looks like you could go as big as 24" monitor with that desk but it would be tight.
the 22" would fit nicely in it
if you havent bought the desk yet check this price out: http://www.shopmainstreetonline.com/product_info.php?products_id=7425&shopcom

WOW! thats a good price, thanks. now I need to find out how much shipping is. The othr site I use has free shipping, this one could come out to about the same with the oversized shipping. but thanks

$61.13 for shipping, so that is about $33.00 cheaper. Nice find keakar.

you might want to do the same if this doesnt work out. never know where a deal is hiding. :toast:

I did, and that is the best deal for that desk. Monitor area is 19-5/8" wide and 20-1/2" in height.

wide screens are nice for stuff like photoshop and visual basic, but you need at least a 20" if you're taking the wide screen route and you want the height to be comparable to a 19" regular screen.

ok, how do I compare the height to a 19" regular? Viewable area?

on newegg you can just look at the dimensions on the specifications tab. on other websites you may need to do a little research. if all else fails, use math:
number of vertical pixels X pixel pitch = screen height.
the same goes for width. please keep in mind this is for calculating the actual screen size, not overall size including bezel. JUST the lcd.

I would say anything that's Acer. They make the best LCD's, IMO.

Agreed. There are some nice 22" and 24" Acer models that are supposedly some of the best in their class (for graphics work).

looks great, my only problem is that its 16.2 million colors instead of the 16.7 which this one has: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824001095&Tpk=samsung
stats are almost the same..

Not in photo editing. If you were a graphic designer it might matter.
Webdesign shouldnt be affected either, since web design doesnt use a huge range of colours.

if you have a keen eye, yes.
for what you need, try to shoot for the most number of colors and a high (800:1 or higher) contrast ratio.

i like that samsung lol 2ms response, 16.7 and 800:1(which is sufficent to me lol.. my samsung tv has 5000:1 and it kills my eyes lol)

ok, well being that I have a POS crt monitor right now, I probably wont notice the difference. And I do like the samsung but it is about $30.00 more, and I know it has the rebate but after 6 weeks of waiting for it, its not a big deal for me.

another thing, Im running WindowsXP SP2 and in display properties it only allows you to set the resolution to 1280X1024. My graphics card supports up to DVI-I 2560X1600. The monitor im getting is best viewed at 1680X1050. So how do I get these properties set correctly for the monitor?

The new resolution should be available when you plug in your new monitor :)

Correct.
Example. Currently only 800x600, 1024x768, 1152x864, 1280x720, 1280x768, 1280x800, 1280x960 and 12801024 are available.
If I was to plug in my other monitor (a dual monitor setup), I could then right click on that screen>display properties> and Id have new resolutions in there (i.e. I set it to 1440x900)
