i wanted to know if anyone had any benchmarks comparing the two? id like to buy a blu ray player and would consider the ps3 but only if the bluray player in the ps3 is equal in video quality as a standalone one.

I would have thought not, judging by the ps2/xbox/360's qualities as dvd players, however im sure i remember reading Wile E say he has one (and a standalone player) and its very good as a blu ray player
Taking this into consideration it is worth considering, though im not sure how noisy ps3's are when playing bluray discs (the older consoles were far too noisy)
My uncle has a PS3. Can hardly hear it when playing.
IMO PS3 is the way to go as you can play games on it too. Blu-ray player... you might get some really generic kid games.
Ps3 is quite silent. As for blu-ray, choose the ps3, for it can be upgraded (hopefully) to that new protocol to be supposed released in the end of this year.

Yeah Easy Rhino, I have owned both, and the ps3 is identical in a/v quality on my Onkyo/Infinity 5.1 and 32" Samsung LCD HDTV. (Setup given for point of reference). The ps3 also manages to upconvert DVDs better than the standalone did.
The ps3 is hands down the way to go. I am 100% satisfied with the purchase.

This exact subject is discussed at great length in the AVS forums.
