I tried to install Vista on my friends machine the other day. It comes up with a "CD device needs a driver..." message and blocks install. It gives no other help and does not name the device and can't go forward unless I have a driver cd. It is a 4 year old gateway that is still pretty good machine. It does have a dvd drive and a cd/rw drive. It does boot off the DVD drive, so it somehow is accessing the dvd ok so not sure why it will not continue on something it is already using?

If the issue is the other cd drive, why would it be totally blocking install instead of just erroring out that device? I have no clue where or what driver to get so I am stumped at this point. I figured I could just go to bestbuy and get a new cd drive, but was hoping someone ran into this issue already and has some clue?

Here is a screen shot of the message http://www.saunalahti.fi/janij/blog/images/2006_oct_vista_rc2_install_problem.png

My bad its not a gateway its some custom build pc from Tiger. I don't know to much cause its at a friends house and I be at my house. It is a Dvd Drive, he managed to install vista on it once and then he got a virues of something so he wanted to do a complete reinstall, but gets that message. I don't get why that is happening rather annoying:confused:

that is a new one to me too. and i have installed it with everything from a new sata dvdrw to an old old OLD dvd rom. like namslas said we would need more info about the computer to help.

but i did find this after some googling

"You can solve the problem by using the same solutions to get RC2 to install on vmware.

You need a floppy disk/USB mass storage with the windows generic CDROM drivers (cdrom.inf , cdrom.sys) that you're going to use when vista asks you for the cdrom drivers."

dont know if it will help or not. do you have a floppy or usb flash drive to copy the driver to?

Indeed I do, in fact I have already read that trying to seek the anwser by my self. In case you didn't notice my first comment is a direct copy and past of his issue only that the kid part was changed to my friend(cause it is my firend who has the issue). Where can I get these generic CDROM drivers from, will it work for that dvd rom drive. Also for his system specs, he has and AMD athlon XP with 512MB DDR RAM, not to sure what kind of motherboard he has, one dvd rom drive, one cd rom drive and one flopply drive. Anything else yall want to tell me specificly and I'll find out. Thank for the Quick response:)

Most likley you need a driver update from the Drive manufacturer, check their website for whatever brand/model it is.

disconnect the cd rom during install on the dvd rom:toast:

You sure that will work, I'll go to his house right now and try that. Also should I disconnect both the CD and DVD Drive or just the DVD drive?

disconnect the cd rom during install on the dvd rom:toast:

That should get the Vista installed, but you may still need the driver to get the drives to work. Might be able to get them off of Vista update service after install.

I had the exact same problem. With XP, the IDE burner worked fine. Trying to install Vista, got hung up in the same place as you. Since I was dual booting, one workaround was to install Vista within XP, but then in Vista it would not read anything off this burner, be it data or music etc. I also wanted to install Vista on a totally separate HDD, so I formated and tried again. I called LG and the burner I had supposedly was not compatible with Vista (go figure), so I bought another IDE, this one specifically compatible with Vista, same crap. I ended up returning it and going with a SATA burner and it worked fine, but to this date, XP reads my IDE burner fine, while Vista does not.

I gues you could try buying a dvd player and then disconnet the cd rom and dvd rom , then install the new dvd rom and and try the vista install ...maybe you could remove the one from your rig and use that...Not really sure besides that.

i would try taking your dvd drive over there and unplug all of thier cd / dvd drives and only use your drive. and if it installs then power off and put thier drives back and see what happens. aside from that i have no idea. i have never seen this error.

maybe you should try disk kill. just zero out the binary, and then see if it'll let you install vista.

There is a MS KB article on this and I believe it is a firmware related issue with the DVD drive. I think it specifically referenced LG and Samsung drives as they are major OEM's but also stated other drives could be affected. If you DO manage to get Vista installed, it probably will not see the affected drive in Windows. Sorry I don't have a link to the KB article but a quick search at MS Support should bring it up. Good luck.
