View Full Version : New Memory?
Can someone tell me what they think would be the best buy for budget DDR400 RAM? I'm thinking Corsair ValueSelect, Transcend or JetRam... I don't have nearly enough money to buy Corsair XMS memory or anything like that though. Anyone care to steer me in the right direction??
Thanks ;)

i know these guys already told you but yeh the corsair stuff is prob the best, have you looked at OCZ memory atol cos there budget stuff is quite gd too. ;)
Yeah, I would like to check out OCZ too, but the problem is they are really hard to find here in South Africa (if you can find some at all ;) ). The major brands here are pretty much Corsair and Kingston. And for R360 (approx. $55 US) for 512MB Corsair RAM, I guess it's a bargain here in SA... Thanks again though.

oops soz didn't read your location lol :o well then go for the corsair. only reason i don't like kingston is that it has some problems with certain asus mobo's
Then no Kingston for me since I have an ASUS mobo too. ;) And I've just ordered the Corsair now. Hope they don't have a problem with my current Transcend RAM, although I doubt it. Maybe they can even run at the 2,3,3,6 timings that the Transcend maxes out on? Guess we'll just have to wait and see...

i'm not too sure. but i know that 1GB of corsair ram won't cost much over £60 but it will be buget stuff and i doubt you'll get gd timings out of it ;)

Stock timings on Corsair Value are 2.5-3-3-8 I have them running 5:4 in the Missus rig(OC 2.4C@ 3.0 250FSB) so they are doin 216 at 2.5-3-3-7 if I recall I have made no effort to tighten the timings as the Mobo they are in is not OC friendly to begin with
Mmm. I couldn't get hold of the Corsair because there wasn't any available for another 3weeks in South Africa... So I got myself the Transcend. It's also decent RAM. Although the timings aren't very fast. But now I have another interesting dilemma. My mobo doesn't support two DIMM's that are both Double Sided at DDR400! How screwed up is that? Remind me never to buy an ASUS board. First there's no AGP frequency lock, and now it won't run two modules that are both double sided at 400MHz! FCOL! :( I'll check if I can swop one for a single sided one if possible though. Meanwhile I'll have to make due with some DDR400 RAM running at DDR333! Great.

sorry to spam but asus is a first tier, top of the line mobo manufacturer, its sad to hear you guys have had problems with them but thats what tech support/rma are for
Yeah, I thought so as well. And they make pretty decent boards, but next time I'll try another board and see how it compares... I'm really looking at the MSI Neo2 boards, but won't have the money for one for a while still. And tech support won't fix what they hard-wired in the K8V-X. I guess I just didn't make a very educated decision since I thought that all ASUS boards were excellent quality. Never gonna make that mistake again though. ;)
HEY! I've actually got it working at DDR400. I swopped the new module with one of my sister's Transcend and now it works perfectly. And her mobo supports it as well so everyone's happy! So I take back my remark about ASUS. Sorry ASUS! (Although I'll probably get another board just to try it in any case at a later stage...)
