Does anyone know where you can get just memory chips for graphic cards? I am looking at the possibility of sodering on new chips. Are they even released for public purchase?

No. I think you're taking DIY to the fanatical level...

I was just curious, I have a friend that could solder them he does that at a plant for a living.
Anyways if someone knows where you can get the chips let me know.
I guess you could find them somewhere. You could try calling samsung and asking them if there's a chance, but the fact that you're going to buy just a few chips might make it ridiculously expensive...

I think even you could get chips you would have issues with Bus Width and BIOS'S,and like Zaam said the price would probably negate the gains anyway, money better spent on a better card I say

Ya I was just curious, me and my buddy just like to mess around with moding things. It is more of a learning experience than anything else.
If that's the case, you could try some electronic forums and see if anyone knows something about memory. Just be careful with BGA memory because since you can't see the solder, you'll have to hope everything is soldered correctly and nothing's short-circuiting or anything. ;) (Unless you have an xray o'course) And try to get similar memory to what was on the board, except maybe faster access times or something like that and maybe the BIOS won't have a big problem with them. I don't know if you'll get anywhere, but good luck... :D

I will do some checking around, if anyone comes up with a place to get memory let me know. I will post if I find a place.
Oh, and yes my friend does have access to an xray machine at his work. He could do it right before or after his shift.

you can get memory from a borken/dead card. you can search ebay they are fairly common. It just depends on what you want to pay and how hard you want to work at it. Yes I admit it I have toyed with the idea too  when I was boored. I haven't hit that level of boredom yet though to actually do it. maybe this winter ;)
