I'm thinking of getting nVidia Geforce 7600 gt graphics card for my new Dell Vostro system. Is this a good card? Along with the following spec
Core 2 Duo e4400
2048 MB RAM
500 GB Hard Drive
Windows XP Pro
I want to play these games
Medieval 2 total war (Medium to High settings)
FIFA 08
LOTR Battle for Middle Earth 2
Age of Empires III
Will the 7600 gt and this setup run these games smoothly?
Thanks

That's a fairly good card. You could look at some of the cheaper GeForce 8 series cards. To answer your question though, you will be able to run those games fine with that card.

Actually, that is a fairly nice card.
No offense, but it may be worth waiting until after the holiday season is over. With G92 being released, and ATi/nVidia competing again heavily the next couple months.
May get you soemthing a little bit nicer for the same price. I am still stating though that if you want to get it now go right ahead, it is still a nice card.
EDIT: I just noticed you have an 8600GT in your specs. Myself, I would think the 8600GT would be tiny tad bit better! Is it really that bad?

How does the 7600 gt compare to these cards
256 mb nVidia 8300 gs
128 mb ATI Radeon HD 2400 pro
256 mb ATI RAdeon X1300

The 8600 is in a separate PC

Ahhhh, gotcha. 7600GT is > all 3.

What about the RADEON X1650 pro

X1650 Pro is around the equivalent to a 7600GS.
I would only buy it if the 7600GT isn't in stock.
I picked up the 7600GS about 5 months ago when it was on sale at Circuit City for $70.
Another good look into if your going the cheaper route, a 512MB 7300GT. Beats a 7600GS at higher resolutions WITHOUT AA/AF enabled.
EDIT: But if you need a budget card that will last you about a year, I would look into a 2600XT.

yep that will be fine - i play that medieval total war 2 on my system on good settings fine.

i have the AGP XFX 7600GT and so far i love it. i oc'd it to 630-790 from 560-700 and havent had any lag issues as of yet. it plays BF2, RSV, and medal of honor airborne with all settings maxed out. so it should be a good card for ya.
I would go for that x1900gt on sale on newegg...

Thanks a million for all the responses
Is the X1300 256 mb worth looking into?

no way, that thing is too weak. What is your budget? Also, what is the watts and 12v amps on the power supply?

If it's the XT and it's cheap enough, yeah. Those things in XT flavor clock like crazy, but I would still go with the 7600GT, it's a superior card.

I can get the X1300 for 60 eur ($80). I'm just looking for the cheapest card that will play the games I mentioned for a while, cause I'll be getting a better card in a few months. If it will play the games, I'm happy for now. As long as there 's no lag, I don't mind putting down the settings a bit.

with how cheap the 7900GS and the x1950GT cards are i would look into one of them.the 7900GS is a great card and the x1950GT isn't much slower than a x1950pro.

There is a link to a cheap way to get one of the most KICK A$$ 7600's ever built. My 7600XXX went from stock clocks of 650 /800 right up to 700/900 without even trying. I then modded it and got an amazing 785/920 out of her with water.
Best 7600 for the dollar and I promis you if the card is in good shape (being an ebay link, I cant attest for its quality) but it is a dual lifetime warranty through XFX as well. Worst case senario is get the card for a good deal and maybe need to RMA it for a new one from XFX( no real loss).
Just my 2 pennies....good luck with whatever you purchase!

What about the RADEON X1650 pro
In order of speed, slowest to fastest.
X1300, 8300GS, HD 2400, x1650pro, 7600GT
To be honest, the 7600GT is a good choice - if you want faster, look for an x1950GT or PRO, or consider forking out more for a 2600XT or an 8800GT/GTS
Some people reccomend the x1650 pro, i know from personal experience they arent all equal. some of them use DDR2 ram instead of DDR3, and the DDR2 models are MUCH slower (4,200 for the DDR2 model in 3dmark 05, compared to over 5,500 from a DDR3 card with the same clock speeds)

Hey just saw on www.ebuyer.com they're selling a Geforce 7600 GS for £40. That's really cheap, is the card any good.
Noticed one reviewer said it plays all total war games on full spec but he needed to overclock it to play Medieval 2. I presume he meant play M2 on full spec.
The card is also good for OC apparently.
What's the verdict? Much difference between GS and GT?

I can comment on this, personally own one.
I would say they are in between an X1650 Pro and the 7600GT.
I get 8300's on stock, 10k with overclocks in 3dmark03, 4500 in 3dmark05 and approximately 2300 in 3dmark06.
I am processor bottlenecked even AFTER the 4.3Ghz overclock, There are only 2 games I have a problem playing: Colin McRae DiRT(its severely coded for a good cpu), and Bioshock. I have to run Bioshock on everything low @ 800x600 to get approx. 30-40 fps.
At that price I would say it is pretty decent.
Main point difference between GS and GT, is that GS uses DDR2 onboard memory.
How much of a price difference is it from the 7600GT?

Hey pete why don't you just go for this card:
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-151-SP&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=938
Its only slightly more than the GS you mentioned above and would play all your games with ease....

Exactly what I mentioned a while ago, DM. It's a great card! I second that!
I wonder how much a 512MB flavor of that card is.

Price Difference of 30 euro
JR RACING FAN do you play Med 2 Total War?
JrRacinFan
10-11-2007, 02:01 PM
Sadly, No I do not. If you would like I could bench the card? Is there a demo available?
EDIT: Nevermind I found a demo and downloading now. Also, I ran a system requirements test on SR Labs, I almost meet recomended for the game, I lack in RAM that it calls for with recommended specs.

@drunkenmafia
That card looks great. Would it beat the X1950 pro?
Do you know if it requires its own power supply plug?

10-11-2007, 02:25 PM
jrracingfan, If you could test Medieval 2 total war demo on your system that would be great, thanks. Just see what is the highest graphics settings you can play smoothly on.
JrRacinFan
10-11-2007, 02:26 PM
Yup, smoothly to you is considered what. 35fps? 50fps?
If I can attain those speeds, I will try to enable AA/AF and see how much of a performance hit it takes from the card.
BUT, If you are planning on getting the 7600GS and the 7600GT is only chump change more, go the 7600GT. I wish I did.
Peteballaghaderreen
10-11-2007, 02:40 PM
Sorry, I don't really understand that fps stuff, just as long as there's no lag.
It'd be great if the GS was satisfactory, as my budget is VEEERRRY tight, unfortunately.
JrRacinFan
10-11-2007, 02:49 PM
Ok, this is at stock without an overclock.
I get approximately 25fps in-game, 1024x768, no hdr with everything on medium. So yes it does lag some.
I am pretty sure it is due to a processor bottleneck though.
I could further test with a processor overclock if you would like.
EDIT: FPS = how many frames it can render per second.
Peteballaghaderreen
10-11-2007, 02:54 PM
Yeah, go ahead with the CPU OC
I'll be using the card with Core 2 Duo E4400, so that should help a bit!
BTW, thanks very much for all this
JrRacinFan
10-11-2007, 03:12 PM
You are very welcome.
Same settings with a cpu overclock @4.4Ghz. Approx 32fps.
The answer to your question is that it is playable BUT not great looking.
I would look into a refurbed X1900 or that 2600xt, not saying I don't love my card but I mostly use it for HTPC.
Peteballaghaderreen
10-11-2007, 03:34 PM
Would it be better with a core 2 duo and 2 GB RAM??
JrRacinFan
10-11-2007, 03:38 PM
Of course but BUT, when I overclock it is a VERY small bottleneck left.

IMO a 1950Pro should be your minimum to look at, their dirt cheap, demolish a 7600GT and are pretty strong performers vs other high-ish end cards. A quick google search shows the cheapest 256MB 1950Pro is £65 (55 with google checkout)
