I'm looking to upgrade my comp in a couple of weeks and was gonna get a prescott 3.4GHz to try and squeeze the last amount of life out of my skt478. i was just wondering if it would be worth while upgrading to lga775. the only problem is the mobo i get would have to be AGP cos i just bought a new card x800pro VIVO. sow ould it be worth upgrading now or wait a couple of years then do a full upgrade?
thanks in advance for any help ;)
i just realised that if i'm gonna get a new mobo then i could also get the new 939 and a cpu to match also pls give your thoughts on this :D
In my opinion I wouldn't buy a 3.4GHz if you've already got a 3.2GHz. It's not worth the money for such a small improvement! AGP is going to be with us for a while still, but if you've got a knack for buying the best, then you'll have to wait for a total overhaul of your pc to buy the newest pci express graphics card and motherboard.
And I'm not going into AMD vs. Intel so I can't tell you to go for a 939 Athlon, you've got to decide on your own. Just look around this forum, there are LOTS of threads where people argue over AMD vs. Intel. ;)
I would probably wait until you can at least upgrade your mobo to LGA775 or 939 and buy a CPU that's going to give you a decent performance boost even if you decide to buy an AGP mobo. :D

200Mhz really isn't worth an upgrade. Personally, I wouldn't upgrade a 3.2Ghz at all.

that doesn't really answer my question atol. now i have new question 3.4skt 478 3ghz 630skt775 or a 3800+ venice 939? this better not start some kind of argument about amd and intel :(

Well, if you HAVE to upgrade, I'd go with the 3800, since AMD really is considerably faster for gaming (much to my intel fanboi shame)
But upgrading and keeping the AGP is completely pointless.
