Is it worth setting up DSL (damn small linux) vs. moderately tweaked XP on the old 500MHz Celeron for 24/7 folding? Will the speed increace be worth the pain of trying Linux for the first time, ableit for a simple purpose?

Also, any way to overclock it on the propriatary ASUS 810i board? Systool was a no-go, and Clockgen didn't have the PLL clockgen needed.

omg you bastard you don't fold
jk

You should try the GPU fold once they get it working for the HD series though... I bet 2 2900XTs would really pwn at that.

Not worth it. If you have more than 128Mb or RAM and let it be, soon windoze, despite everyone bashing it, will page out almost all of itself that is unneeded and allow more RAM for the app. I have seen it, tried it, and others have too.

Hat, there's a special distro called Foldix. It uses tyhe linux kernel and FAH, that's it, so it runs quite fast. You'll need to Ethernet it to a router though.

I wouldnt fold, it leaves the GPU under load most of the time, greatly decreasing how long it will last, from around 4~5 years down to probably 3 ~ 2 years. Well on a backup its fine though.

Not true^

Capacitors might suffer, but the core itself is much more resistant to heat. Thus why we still have good working Prescotts around, and those old AMD's. And My X1800XT hasn't died of anything yet.

I CPU fold, not GPU fold. On my main rig I only let it eat 80% of the core, and, according to Everest, CPU temp after 10 hours of folding is 40C.

@ ben, will Foldix work if I just run the cable to my mobo with two LAN ports, not the router?

if its a crossover cable, then it might do.

Yes, crossover.

In that case, as long as your system is configured to allow computers to connect through it, then yes.
