WTB a working 80gb+ external hard drive 7200rpm with atleast 8mb cache that is compatible with Emachine T6212 desktop.

That's...a bit low for an asking price.

Yeah, $20 is a really low offer for an 80GB hard drive, especially an external.

And why does it have to be 7200RPM and have 8MB of Cache? The USB 2.0 will eliminate any speed increases you would gain by having them.

so it dont matter if its external? I have internal hdd with 2mb cache and it is very noticible slow.

I am a noob when it comes to hdd....

the enclosure can TAKE upto a 750GB drive, it doesnt come with one installed.

Externals are like internals, but on USB2.0 they hit a wall around 30MB/s - that means 7,200RPM with 2MB cache is enough, and an 8MB you wont see much of a difference, if any.

I guess you dont know the basics, an 'external' drive is just an internal drive, in a 'cage' or 'enclosure' - basically an adaptor to make the drive work on USB.

Both are same.

External drive will never be faster than a internal. Externals are meant for Storage/Backup purposes. Suppose you screw up ur internal for instance u have a power surge and it hits the internal drive u loose all the data. So it is always necessary to store important info on a external drive which is not used often.

I suppose u current drive is a IDE interface drive. You need SATA interface internal drive to be faster. Look for SATA 2.0 or SATA 300 or Raptor Series which has 10,000 RPM. (ofcourse expensive).

You can buy a 8/16MB cache SATA drive. Load OS and all important info on this new drive. Buy a IDE drive compatible external hdd case/hdd enclosure. Use ur existing drive in this case as external drive.

An external hard drive = hard drive + enclosure.

An enclosure holds a hard drive. You can buy an enclosure, put a HDD inside of it, and voila, make your own external hard drive.
