OK, we asked our ISP to upgrade us to 8MBps. They said our line was compatible with that speed, so we went for it. Now, 2 months later, we still aren't getting it. When the new line went active, we have NEVER recieved 8MB, but speed is going all over the place, mainly below 512kbps though. Before we were on 2MBps. it worked fine... any ideas on WTF is happening here? Could we sue the ISP? I'm pretty sure we could, QoS and all that crap...

no you cant sue the ISP.... you have a contracted range and I am sure you are within it.

Any ideas on why we aren't getting what we are paying for then? We asked the ISP to check if we could use it, they said "Yes, your line is compatible with 8Meg speeds.

Its tough to say.... how are you testing your speeds?

www.speedtest.net is what I'm testing speeds with, and downloads from NVIDIA and filehippo as well, since download speeds always seem to be a tenth of the connection speed over here

DO a speedtest at speedtest.net and post the link from it.....
I am curious to see what the speeds are listed on there

Today seems to be one of the few days where we get an OK speed... but it's still nowhere near 8MBps. I garuntee that if I do one again tomorrow, it's back down to 512kbps...

3mb..... they are going to see that and tell you that you are within contracted range.
It sucks, I know...

But it keeps going down to 512kbps... surely that can't be within contracted range?

I cannot tell you for sure.... but you know how the ISPs are. They will say it is your fault no matter what

At least here in Sweden they are working on making it easier to blame the ISP's for such things.. I mean, you pay for a service but it performs as a service that's like £10 cheaper/month.
At least they say that the government will be on the the ISP's back and it's also said the ISP's will get hurt if they don't provide the speeds announced.
But that's maybe not the case in the UK though.. Unless this mighty EU is saying something about it.
Anyhow, I get as fast speed as you with 2mbps (I actually pretty much always more than max out the download and always at least max out upload). :) So I'm very happy.
EDIT: Can't the ISP see how fast you go?

Your parents might have something differant to say about that..... Depending on your contract, you might get slapped with a hefty fee. Plus, I bet your parents dont even know the differance anyhow.
