Intel has unveiled it's first 45nm Penryn CPU - the Core 2 Extreme QX9650. Like the QX6850, it's clocked at 3GHz, but Intel's vice president and director of digital enterprise operatrions, Steve Smith, claimed that 'even that outperforms the existing [QX6850] platform'. Smith also said that Intel expects to get more out of the architecture in the future, and revealed that the chip will have 12MB of Level 2 cache, a 1,333MHz FSB, support for SSE4.1 and a TDP of 130W. The chip is scheduled for launch on 12 November.

when this is released - anyone think they'll price cut some of the other chips?

kingpin just smashed the wr in 3d06 with one of these babies, beat it by 1300pts too. I think it was clocked at 5.6GHZ and got an 8800 cpu score. thats over 3 times mine lol.

I dont see it giving a price cut right away.. maybe on the 65nm QX Cpus, but I dont think it will effect the price of the Q6600 elc.

I want a new chip soon:P but like $1200 is just to much for me to spend on one, I think I'll wait till January for Q9550 or lower.

I've heard that Phenom will get close to that 06 score without exotic cooling. That's just blatant rumor and heresay though.;)

The best part of owning a Q6600: I don't need to really upgrade till Q1 or even Q2 of 2009. Sure it's a B3 and won't OC as nicely as a G0 but with at least if I take it to 3.3 GHz, that's lots of meat for me. Funny that the first Kentsfield was sold for $1100 and mine, being a down-scale variant priced at $300 can go berserk with OC'ing.

Moral: Don't just pounce onto a Yorkfield. Wait for downscale variants to come out (which would be 1/4 the price of the current YF part), OC it and enjoy:D

Current Kentsfield owners/buyers: You really don't need to switch to YF unless you're addicted to the very last unit gained with the benchmarks. Stick to your quads till 2009 when something with FSB 1600 comes out. Meanwhile upgrading to a X38 board would be a plus+

Core 2 Extreme QX9650= To damn expensive. I would rather go with the Q6600. My 680i is not compatible with the QX9650 any way:(.
