So, I was monkeying around in my case today, and I finally pinpoint the source of a lot of fan noise in my computer. Its the fan onto of the northbridge chip. So, I need to replace it. I am thinking I can't outright disable the fan. Right? So, I need help choosing a fan to replace it with.
Here is a pic of the current fan and heatsink. Are all heat sinks and chipset fans universal? I basically need some help picking the right product. Thanks in advance.

i cant see yur pic, my work is prolly blocking the host, anyways if you post your board model and chipset type i could help u find a compatible replacement. not all chipset mounts are the same but usually theres coolers made that will fit them. also thouse small fans on chipsets often spin really fast and make a high pitch whine, if thats what yur hearing it might just b normal and instead of just replacing it you might want to look for a more efficient cooler to replace it with.

Pull off the fan. On the other side it should have a number. Google the model number to determine what size/voltage it is. The amps of the fan should also be listed if not it should show up in the google search.

i would recommend getting this low noise fan/heatsink combo if you have the room for it:

if not then get this fan to use with your heatsink, its nice and quiet:

just be carefull to measure to be sure it is a 40mm fan so you get the right size replacement.

keakar is right. CL-C0034 aka Extreme Spirit II is an excellent choice, if you have the space. Stock aluminum HS/Fan combos are usually not only inefficient but noisy as hell. On my DFI RDX200 board, the tiny northbridge fan was very loud and the cheap 15 gram aluminum heatsink was a joke. Even at top speed (up to 7000 RPMs) my NB temps would hit 55C to 60C. With Extreme Spirit II temps hover in high 30s and low 40s. Massive temp drop.

The board I have is a MSI K7N2 Delta
Thanks for all the tips and suggestions. I appreciate it.

Yeah, I went ahead and bought that one last night in the interest of buying blind and getting it fixed quickly. It was only $4 so I figured why not?
Thanks!

the sythe is super quiet, i put one one a video card and with the door off couldnt even hear it running.
just take temp readings now and after the change to be sure it cools good enough.
most times it is best to use a combo fan/heatsink to be sure they cool good together and as you saw the prices for the combos arent that bad.

Are the Scythe case fans generally quiet as well?

hell yes! i love the "s" flex ones but the 120mm 800rpm versions just cant be beat in my opinion. i tried them because they are only 9dbl so i thought WOW total silence and 35 cfm airflow, i found my case temps were at 90 degrees ambient inside temp so that was great. see it here: http://www.directron.com/sff21d.html
i would recommend using the 20dbl version first to see how that cools for you because i knew my case was well designed for minimum airflow cooling. see it here: http://www.directron.com/sff21e.html
im running a prescott p4 3.4ghz and only using the psu and the 120mm fan top mounted for silent cooling.
the only noise was that damn leaf blower for a video card cooler so i swapped that out here: http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=30231
i have cool air being drawn in from the bottom at the front and at the bottom at the rear from the bottom two pci slot covers are removed so air comes in like an upside down "T" shape and goes out the top and the psu.
