Hi, I've got a D-link DI-524 router, and a D-link access point (airplus xtremeG or smthin like that) and a switch.
I have the connection approx 200m away, and there are lots desktops connected to it. The main server has a direct cable conection.
Only an ethernet cable connects all of them, so I got the switch connected to the coming ethernet cable and another eth cable straight to the pc. And as I want to conect to the network (and staying hidden), I changed the workgroup and the rest settings in my vista laptop so that I stay hidden. And, I connected and set up the AP to the switch.
Now I can get signal from the ap and actually a lot better optimized net on my laptop within 70-90m including the interferences as trees (which I can't rip out), but my house is quite far away...i.e approx 190m.

SO, what should I do inorder to extend that tiny range by taking help of both teh router and the AP ?

P.s it's a 3mbps upload+download connection, so I have to get it somehow.
AND, I'm not stealing, I've just been told to make this as confidential as possible.
And, I'm a bit newbie to wireless...

How can you connect to a wireless network AND remain hidden?
The user on the other end (if moderately experienced) would know that you have connected.

If possible could we get a diagram, your explanation is a little confusing.
So let me get this straight.

Network with computers attached by ethernet.
Your picking it up from your AP, which you hooked into their networks switch.
Whichyou then access from your wireless reciever at home.

Correct?

then let's just say, they're not even moderatley experienced...and with network discovery and a different workgroup saves the day from the not-so even moderately exp. ppl from seeing me...And, just tell me how can I get the whole thing to work cuz I'm typin this from a dial-up pc............:ohwell:

Firstly, Im surprised that the connection even spans that far.
Have you connected to it before?

Im not going to go into the illegality of what you may attempt to do, but if you havnt yet connected my guess is as follows:

You will try to connect, your access point will send out the signal which permits you to pick up the AP. Assuming you get a good signal, you connect with your wireless card. Assuming that your wireless card isnt using any form of additional rangeboosting hardware, you probably wont be able to send data back to the access point due to range.

So you will be recieving packets, but you wont be able to send any (or any that will actually arrive at the AP anyway). Resulting in no connection to the wireless network.
Have you connected before? If so Im extremely surprised lol.

...of course I can access the network and and browse the net, they're net works on proxy's...
The only things is how can I use both the router and ap to work together. And i think IM would be much faster method to solve this... email- bhaskar1nlove@yahoo.com, i'm online now :)

I have no experience with connecting Routers and Access Points so I dont think I can help you. When you say AP im assuming you mean an industry/enterprise level AP (longer range than commercial) is that correct?

Although i have no experience, I believe you should research into something called "ad hoc networking." I think that might help you. Sorry that I can be of no further assistance.

Maybe someone else can help.

it's ok...it's just that this dial-shit keeps eating my head :banghead:
oh and ad-hoc is for close distances btw...
i think i'm not a newbie after all! but this network is something I can't figure out...

Your best bet is to read your router manual to find out if its actually capable of doing what you want it to do.

hm...will I get atleast 40% more range if I connect the router to the hub/switch and the access point to the router ? lol this sounds wierd....
