OK, so, I have a dial-up cable downstairs. Since I'm on a router, and the router won't allowme to do anything I want to do, even with port-forwarding, I want to know if I can conect to a broadband Internet account with the dial-up cable. I'm asking this because usually, broadband's phone number is "0", and I'm not sure it'll work with this. It should also be noted that I don't have one of the USB modems they send you, we threw it away when we got the router.
Thanks,
Ben

What is a broadband internet account according to you? Most cable cable connections are broadband connections, though the term broadband has always been vague.
Even when I know that your request is vague, dial up cable to broadband internet account? What hardware do you have and what connection, details svp.

Normally if you have to "Dial" it's not broadband, Unless it's that AOL CR#%$.(not true Broadband).

Any dial up service is not broadband. The term "dail-up" means you have to literally call a phone number and use the transmission frequency to transmit data. The last I checked, it was 56k max.

So because I get 8Mbps (read: 3Mbps), I can't use the cable? OK, thanks.

Quite wrong, PPPoE is very common for internet connections, it is a dial up line. Most modems handle the dialing up themselves though, USB modems mostly do not.
VPN is a dial up connection over an existing IP line as well.

Exactly, whenever I go back to Taiwan my relatives use PPPoE dial up ADSL. The dial up takes about 3 seconds unlike the conventional phone line dial up which takes about 20-30 seconds. All PPPoE connections require is a network your attaching to like username@hinet.net and a password, there is no phone number needed.
